Low ACT=No chance at UofC

I have been interested in the University of Chicago for some time now, and I told my counselor about it, and he basically told me that I wouldn't succeed there because I have a 27 ACT. I know that with determination and preserverence anything can be done, but would I be out of my league at UofC.

Well, that would depend on a lot more than just your ACT score. Do you do well in school? Are you a rabid learner? Some people are very intelligent, but are bad test-takers. If that's you, then I certainly don't think you'd be "out of your league." I think it might be more difficult for you to get in; you'd have to really write an excellent essay that shows just how ready for UChicago you are, but I certainly don't think a 27 ACT dooms you to be a lackluster college student for all time.

A 27 is low? Thats better than 90 something percent of the people that took the test.

But to UofC standards.

Well, you know the middle 50% of ACT scores is 29-33. I.e., 25% of the people at UChicago had scores less than 29. And 27 really isn't that much lower than 29. So while your ACT scores may hurt your app a little bit, if you have strong essays and strong grades and strong recs and really shine through in your app, you should stand a pretty good chance.

A low ACT on its own will not keep one out. Type of curriculum attempted and accomplishments therein, essays, and recommendations all are more important.

first of all, dont let anyone tell you you "wont succeed there". Most of the time its a load of ********. In High School i took classes at Dartmouth and got As in them. Then Dartmouth rejected me because "i woudlnt succeed there". So dont let that discourage you because your guidance counsler doesnt know what hes talking about.

well, depending on the rest of your application, most importantly your essays you have a decent chance, i was recruited for swimming with just a 26 on my ACT, however i retook it in October and got a 30, but it was good enough to be recruited, so i think it matters how everything else looks.
