Low APs :(

My top choice is Yale. Everything that's required of me as a "standard" candidate is there .. except for my AP scores. I have a decent SAT score (2310) and ok SAT II scores (800 710 700), my essays were interesting and kind of out of the ordinary, I had really good teacher recs and a good counselor rec plus I sent in an art supplement of two songs that I personally produced from scratch and have won regional award for my compositions in music. I'm an asian female and my AP scores are mainly 4's. How bad am I for Yale?

Schools like Yale get thousands of well-above applicants just like you. If they are even unsatisfied with one small thing, they can reject you with a click of a mouse. AP tests are good indicators of your academic performance in college level, having 4s will probably hurt your chances.

I thought so too - but I took college courses in my junior year and got A’s in both courses. The level of math that I’m in is not listed in regular high school transcripts. My counselor had to report them in separately because common app didnt’ have them listed. Would that make it look better, since I actually got A’s in college classes?

Well, depends where you took the courses too. I took Muti-variable Calc and Differential Equations where it’s ridiculously easy getting an A, but I do not know how much that would help. There are hundreds of kids who are just like us I. I’d say what it comes down to is how awesome your essay is. Good luck tho! chance me back!!

Thanks  This helped a lot. Good luck to you too!

Well, you got A’s in classes that were supposedly “collegiate level”, but the test that you took you got a 4 or a B. That shows your school has grade inflation. I have gotten all 5’s, but I have gotten B’s in almost all of my AP classes.

No, the A’s I got were from actual college courses that I took from a nearby college taught by a professor. It’s not an AP class.

Hopeful - what kind of college was it? Was it a community college - that is absolutely meaningless to a school like yale. Was it an easy to get into state college - pretty meaningless, too.

Is the school nearby Princeton - now that would matter.

I don’t live close to any Ivy Leagues so that’s not an option for me, but it’s one of the best colleges in the state and one of the top five engineering schools in the nation.

Does anybody else have any thoughts about this? It would help me a lot

Hopeful - sounds like you are a contender for Yale, but unless you took college level engineering courses at a top 5 engineering college and received A’s, those college level courses aren’t going to make a difference.

You didn’t say your GPA, but your SAT is good. You are a contender by SAT, but there are no guarantees.

I didn’t apply to any Ivy’s so I don’t know:
Do you HAVE to report your AP scores? I didn’t report any of mine.

Atacom - my GPA is a 4.0 and I’m top 6% in the school. Thanks for your feedback!
Webass - Yale doesn’t require it but I know that it only makes your application stronger to have good AP’s … which I lack. Also, my SAT II’s aren’t very impressive either I admit.

I doubt that 4s on AP exams are going to be what keeps you out of Yale if you get rejected.
