To RPI Students

I've heard that the ratio is something like 1:3. Is this very evident just by walking around on campus and in the classrooms? Do you wish that it was a little bit more balanced?

I think just about all RPI students wish it was more balanced. It is definitely evident among most classrooms and on the campus in general... especially once you've been there a while. However the running joke is that at social events the ratio tends to balance out as many males stay in their rooms on the computer or playing video games.

They are slowly working to improve the ratio. For the class of 2011 it is 1:2 (30% female) and it looks like they are planning on continuing to improve it a little this year as well.

Really the only other thing that can be said in RPI's defense is that they are not alone. Georgia tech and a lot of other tech schools have the same problem (except MIT of course).

I actually attended both RPI and Georgia Tech. The ratio is more noticeable at RPI, maybe because of it's smaller overall size. As someone said, it's not AS BAD at social events as the numbers might indicate, but still is certainly more than noticeable.
