Hi,

Hi,

If you're a girl, I would try women's colleges. Also try colleges in Colleges that Change Lives by Loren Pope, a lot of them offer good merit aid. Then look at some instate schools.

Do you think I have a chance at the top schools like UChicago or UDenver or maybe Claremont-McKenna?

Oh I'm a boy too.

SHS, is your 3.4 GPA weighed or unweighed? Is your school especially tough on grading? Did you take a lot of AP classes?

Oh I forgot to mention, those are other things that helped me...my school was tough on grading and I took lots of APs. (Now that I think about it, probably how I got into the college I'm going to next year). Even if you didn't, though...schools in CTCL will still accept you.

Claremont McKenna, I'm inclined to say no. Their SAT scores are off the charts. I just typed up their stats a few days ago for someone else...

Claremont McKenna College:

22% of applicants admitted
Average HS GPA: 3.91
SAT verbal over 600: 87%
SAT verbal over 700: 46%
SAT math over 600: 90%
SAT math over 700: 54%
ACT scores over 24: 98%
ACT scores over 30: 53%

If you stand out in other ways, such as in extracurriculars (leadership, a big community service project, devotion to some particular activity over the years) there's a chance. I'd say it's a reach. I had decent ECs, but I was rejected from Bates College, which has a similar profile (sadness).

Eek...3.91 is killer.

My 3.4 is unweighted and I took 2 honors freshman year, 0 honors/IB soph year, 1 IB junior year, and I'm planning 2 IBs senior year.

How about UC Davis or UCSD?

You will most likely get rejected by UCD and UCSD. The UC's are ridiculous for OOS students, and they really only look at GPA.

However some schools in California that you might want to look at are Univ. of San Diego, Santa Clara, and Loyola Marymount. You will get into those for sure.

And try for USC.

What are you looking for in a school? Major? Sports? Social Life? Location?

Major..Pre-med (Biology/Business), Sports (Div 1 would be cool, but it's not that important), Social Life (Not much of a partier), Location (No preference)

Well that wasn't very helpful...so I suggest running a college board search and creating your list from there.

Oh dang...thanks anyway.

Hmmm... I don't think U Denver is really a 'top school.' You might try looking into a private school on the smaller side; some of them have more holistic admissions policies than larger places can.

I definitely don't think Denver would be out of reach for you. If you're interested in going, it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

you probably could get into the University of Oregon, or University of Washington

I'm interested in UW, I'm in-state and I think my GPA is a bit low. However, I also think UW is too big for me.

Can't people get into to UO with a 3.2/26 ACT?

Well yah people can go to Oregon with those stats, but your point?

We're trying to find match schools, where you are 75%. Not reach schools.

Try Illinois.

Dude take some reaches, my boy I've known since we were kids is headed out to DUKE on a full ride with an 1890 SAT score.

Play up your other aspects and you can certainly go somewhere far especially considering that if you bring that up to like a 3.5 UW 3.7 W senior year you've got a nice low A average.

Hm...any suggestions for reaches?

And for the Oregon: I was just considering Oregon as my safety, that's all.

You should look at schools ranked ~30 and lower. A lot of those will be willing to overlook a somewhat lower GPA for a great test score. I also agree that you should use college board or something to filter your preferences and bring some options back. The criteria you've listed still makes it difficult for most of us to give you a shortened list.
