I am leaning towards going to UCLA, but I am scared of the competitive atmosphere. I always wanted to go to a good business school, but I am afraid that going to UCLA will kill my GPA . My major is Statistics, which is also not the easiest major. Would it be best to go to UCSD where I will have a better chance of getting a high GPA, so that I could be more competitive for graduate school. So my question is it better to have a mediocre GPA at UCLA in a hard major, or a good GPA at UCSD in an easier field?

Hmm, I doubt UCSD would be any easier. And I think you’ll be fine at UCLA. Just study hard and manage your time well. You’ll be alright.

You’re going to have to trust my psychic powers. Have I let you down before? :)

I feel like UCSD would be harder. Honestly, go to UCLA and dominate. Be the one who makes the curves suck.

@Cayton HAHAHA, I guess not. I’m just a really indecisive person.

@Chaoscuber Why do you think that? I heard that UCSD has really good Math and Science programs, but I’ve never heard of an ultra competitive atmosphere.

I have the same feelings as you.

I know for a fact I’ll get destroyed by UCLA students. These are/were the kids with 4.8+ GPAs in highschool. These were those kids who saved the President’s daughter. These kids are the ones that are going to become our senators, representatives, fortune 25 ceo’s, and the next Liza Minelli.

I’d be lucky to even get a 3.0 gpa…

My goal is to get a 3.4 so I can be a competitive candidate for a master’s program, but I think I’ll forgo grad school once I realize how unprepared and stupid I am. If I can’t succeed in undergrad, what makes me think i can in grad school? Might as well be turning tricks on sunset blvd…Hoping there’s some sick freaks out there who enjoy little Asian boys.

I feel the same way. I’ve visited ucla and ucsd and to be honest I liked ucsd a bit more. I just don’t know what to do?! I feel that ill be more successful at ucsd but its just so…so…so HARD to say no to ucla. I’m thinking you feel the same way @CollegeDropout1. I literally spend a whole day thinking about ucla and ucsd. It’s so depressing knowing that I have to make up my mind in a couple of weeks.

@BurntCorpse

Bro, transfers have gpas comparable to their native UCLA counterparts. It’s not like transfers are any less intelligent or hardworking. Average transfer GPA is over 3.0, by the way, just as the average for all students is over 3.0.

@BurntCorpse

I don’t think that really matters. The reason being is UCLA & Cal reject a lot of people who are “4.8+ GPAs in high school… saved the President’s daughter… are going to become our senators, representatives, fortune 25 ceo’s, and the next Liza Minelli.” So you’ll find those types of people at lower publics like CSUs and privates or in other words everywhere besides community college.

The important consideration is to pick an “easy” major where you don’t get harsh curves.

On a side-note, I don’t think it really makes sense to get an undergrad degree in NOT business if you want an education IN business. MBA is roughly ~60% the same as a BBA. Furthermore MBA is really supposed to be for career advanced because no one is going to hire a fresh student out of college with an MBA over a BBA, in anything the MBA will price himself out of the market.

Your post describes my life so well. It is such a hard situation.
Fortunately I am starting to have more days where I realize I will probably be fine no matter where I go, but that doesn’t necessarily make the decision any easier. I wish you the best of luck with your decision!

@AnthroFlo thanks for the good wishes. Which schools are you considering? I hope we both make the right decision and end up being happy. Wish u luck

I really worried that no one will want to hire me if I have a GPA below 3.0 even if I’m a Statistics major. I really don’t want to become a teacher either. I am really confused.

@CollegeDropout1

What’s your GPA now? What are your grades looking like for your math classes?

@Cayton I’ve taken three math courses so far. They are Finite Math(which I really enjoyed), Cal 1 and Cal 2. I will be taking cal 3 in the summer. I got A’s in Finite Math and Cal 1, but I think it was mainly because they professor was very easy. I’ll probably wind up with a low “A” or a high “B” in Cal 2.

@CollegeDropout1

Eh, calculus is probably pretty hard even with easy professors. Besides, math/statistics majors get somewhat low GPAs on average anyway. It wouldn’t be a problem for you unless you got like a 2.5 GPA at UCLA or something. If you can get a 2.8~3.0 and up, you should be good to go.

Not sure if this would help, but I too did worry about this for awhile. In the end I figured that those admission officers knew what they’re doing when admitting you. They felt you had a fair chance at thriving and succeeding at UCLA.

For Statistics:
2013 average enrolled gpa for transfer students 3.63
2012 " " " " " " 3.64
2011 " " " " " " 3.56

If your transfer gpa is around 3.2~3.4 and you struggled immensely to earn those grades, then I expect you gotta put in a little bit more effort than other students.
If your transfer gpa is around 3.5~3.7 then you’re absolutely fine. Your as qualified as anyone else, and will have similar ability as everyone else.
If your transfer gpa is above any of these then you shouldn’t worry too much.

At this point I don’t think you should worry too much which school would be harder, you’re already in. If anything you will have a fair chance at both school to succeed. What you should ask yourself is which degree and campus has more value to you. Both school is pretty freaking awesome, gratz on getting here, and I believe you should perform the best where ever would make you feel the most comfortable. So for now worry about which degree you would want, and which school suits you the best. You have time to worry about gpa when the first wave of midterms come up like everyone else^^

Don’t worry about your UCLA GPA! You will be fine!

Most of the people I know from CC that came to UCLA have held a GPA that is VERY similar to what they had at CC. Plus, I can say that I am graduating with the same GPA I had at CC, so don’t worry!

Here is what you have to look out for, sometimes you will end up in a class with a professor or TA who is just flat out unreasonable and you will either have to drop before the drop deadline or sneak into another TA’s section if one is offered. TA’s can make your experience amazing or ruin you.

@cochoa14
Thank you for your good wishes too
I have not decided on a school yet, have you?

@ AnthroFlo No I haven’t. It’s either going to be ucla or ucsd. These next couple of weeks are going to be the most difficult of my life….

@cochoa14
SAME! I feel like I am being over dramatic sometimes when I say how difficult it is going to be but then I take time to think about how life changing the decision is and then I am back at square one…
Why UCLA or UCSD?

Same here, I know what you mean. I’m leaning towards ucla because it has a very good program for my major (history). And it’s ucla its hard saying no to that school even though I didn’t fall in love with it. For some reason it didn’t really impress me, maybe because I’m from th LA area. And ucsd… Well I really liked this school I don’t know why. I felt like I connected more there for some reason. Ah I just don’t know what to do!
