Low GPA, Chance at Brown? (Questbridge finalist)

I recently applied to Brown through the Questbridge RD program, and I really want to get into the school.

But, I have a 3.7 UW GPA, in the top 12 % of my class, 32 ACT, glittering extracurriculars pertaining to my college plans and I had some Brown students read my essays. They loved them.

My low GPA has to do with financial, emotional, and mental issues I had over losing my father to a serious venereal disease and facing the consequences after.

Do I have any chance? I know only 1 kid was matched to Brown this year through the Natl. College Match, so don’t they have to accept more QuestBridge kids this time around? This school fits my personality well and all of my academic needs, and I honesty can’t imagine myself anywhere else. I have safeties and matches lined up, so no worries there.

I just really want to get in.

Does Brown know about the situation with your father? If they do, I wouldn’t imagine that they’d hold the 3.7 against you.

Yes, they do. I wrote my Common App essay about it and my Questbridge essays on it.

I lost my dad to AIDS freshman year and didn’t know until junior year.

3.7 is low?

The 3.7 probably isn’t the issue. If anything, it’s the top 12%. However, for a questbridge participant (is that the right term?) whose father passed away, that shouldn’t be an issue. With good EC’s and curricular rigor, OP did everything possible to put her in the best possible position to be admitted to Brown, which is commendable.

You did your best, there’s not much else you could have done. Good luck on Brown!
