Asian (Indian American)
Very Competitive Top-Tier CA HS (no ranking)

The major I’m considering (Public Health) is only offered at three UC’s (Cal, UCI, UCSD) and my family situation caused me to sometimes falter in certain classes sophomore/junior year. I was thinking if I have a competitive ACT score, UCI could happen? Thoughts?

Actually UCI prefers high GPA over test scores, but definitely worth an application. UCSD and UCB will both be pretty tough admits. All schools will take your GPA in context with your competitive HS but GPA usually trumps test scores. All you can do is apply but you need to expand your school list since none of these schools are a solid match.

Explaining your family situation could help in one of the short answer essay questions and you have good EC’s.

If you are a CA resident, I would look at SDSU along with CSULB for solid match schools.

Good Luck.

HAHA your definition of low GPA and my definition is vastly different.

OP’s GPA is below average since 6 of the 9 UC campuses have UC GPA’s of 4.0+ but definitely no low, only for the schools of interest.
