Hello, as you can probably tell by the title my HS gpa hasn’t exactly been Ivy league standard. But I feel like I have what it takes to make it at the Wharton School of Business. So without further ado here are my accomplishments:
UW GPA: 3.3
Weighted: 3.8
5 AP classes (AP Gov, APUSH, AP Lang, AP Lit, AP Micro) passed all of them
2 IB classes (IB Business HL, IB Business SL)
SAT Score: 1500
English: 760
Math: 740
EC:
-Run my own import/export business from China, netted 50k last year
-Helped organise a container ship export to north africa for my Uncle’s company. Container ship carried 30,000 oil drill bits valued at $15,000 a piece
-Avid investor in crypto currencies on track to gross 10k in profit by the spring of 2018
-Routinely hired by friends and family manage financial accounts and retirement funds
-Ran my own used car sale business for the past 2 years (not very much profit )
-3x DECA District qualifier
-3x DECA State qualifier
-2x DECA National qualifier
I know my GPA is low but hopefully they can look past that. Give me your opinions! Thanks!
I don’t care why they would or wouldn’t. I just care if they do or don’t. I’d rather not ponder to why they won’t accept me or why they would. I see Wharton as a steppingstone into my future. There’s plenty alternative routes.
@Futuristic25230 Have to agree with above, it is most probably out of reach. Penn has an average GPA of 3.91 and 90% of the class has a 3.75 or better. Also your SAT score is slightly below average.
Your ECs are definitely unique, but not sure if they can make up for your stats. The chances are not in your favor but you never know, you might be one of those very few freak cases that get in. Better to apply and get rejected than never apply and always wonder what if.
You’ve got a really unique application. No one walks into college making a business that has netted 50k, or even attempted to invest in cryptocurrencies. In my opinion, writing the college essay that focuses on these unique aspects will get you into Wharton. Yes, your GPA is low, but your SAT score is pretty good. Nothing makes up for the lack of a GPA, but these other factors can supplement your overall application.
Good luck to you!
Actually, Wharton have a lot of applicants with their own businesses. Many got rejected even with very successful ones. They also admit a lot without any business experience. It is heuristic process, It all depends on how you can strike them with your application.
In general strong/interesting ECs do not compensate for below average academic stats. While admissions is holistic, academics do play a huge role in admission decisions. All anyone can tell you is to apply and give it your all – but to be prepared with other less selective options that appear affordable and that you would be happy to attend.
Yeah I get where everyone is coming from. Guess I should’ve focused more on my grades throughout HS instead as I could’ve done insanely better (damn you laziness). All is left is just to apply and see what happens.
