i’m a current senior in a public school in washington state. i’m wondering what my admission chances are with the stats & ec’s below for: nyu, boston u, case western, uc’s, bowdin (def a reach but wanted to try), villanova, american u, uw seattle, and northeastern.
stats:
gpa 3.6/4.0; weighted around 4.2~4.4
sat 1400 (planning to retake in december 2020)
ecs:
language school - throughout high school, several leadership positions, started the first afterschool program and getting a rec letter from teacher
dance - performed at the “olympics” of the dance as a opening performer
stem related club - executive writer for 4 years
cultural diversity club - 1 year; selected from a pool of applicants to participate in program.
internship - summer of junior year; helped assist mentally disadvantaged kids with their homework and school
international child art foundation volunteer -
personal statement:
wrote about my cultural background of being asian pacific islandic but also having hawaiian/samoan cultural background.
theres other miscellaneous stuff i’m going to add on to the ec’s, but here are the top few. if there’s anyone who has been accepted to top schools with lower gpas, i’d also like to know some tips.
It will depend on the rigor of your classes but I think most of these schools will be a reach. I would add some targets/safeties to your list. Even UW is pretty tough to get into. Schools will review your GPA in the context of your classes (APs, Honors, Course selection) and your HS. Good lucK!
American is very big on demonstrated interest, so bear that in mind. Of the ones in your list I’m familiar with, it is probably the best match to your stats. I think most of the others are low reach, I’m not sure about UW as you are instate so will get a bump from that. Also depends on what your major is. If you need financial aid bear in mind you won’t get any from the UCs due to being out of state.
FYI my daughter got into NYU a couple of years ago with similar stats to yours (she has a kind of unique angle that helped I think, plus we think fantastic teacher recs) but she says just about everyone she knows there had higher stats than her at HS …
Since you are OOS, you will be paying full fees at around $65K/year to attend any of the UC’s. They offer little to no financial aid and your stats will not make you competitive for the few merit scholarships offered.
Intended major?
Race/ethnicity is not a consideration.
UCB,UCI and UCSC are test blind this admission cycle.
2019 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 9%
UCSB: 6%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 9%
UCSC: 40%
UCR: 53%
UCM: 80%
2019 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 12%
UCLA: 7%
UCSD: 33%
UCSB: 32%
UCD: 47%
UCI: 35%
UCSC: 72%
UCR: 87%
UCM: 96%
I agree with others that you need to add safeties to your list.
Do you have any financial constraints at all? Have you run the NPCs? With the exception of U.Washington since it is in-state (if you get accepted), the rest of your list could be expensive.
For the exception of UW, all of these schools are private and out of state. Even if you got into 1 or 2 schools on the list, there’s a good chance you couldn’t afford them. UW is also a hyper-competitive school, so getting the major you want is far from guaranteed.
I recommend putting WSU on the list. If all else fails, you have a solid affordable school, and a reasonable assurance to get into a good major.

That’s great your daughter got in to NYU! Could you potentially give me some tips on how to get into NYU with similar stats regarding essays? Financials aren’t much of a concern for me at this point.
“Financials aren’t much of a concern for me at this point.”
What do you mean by “at this point”?
Do you mean that you and your parents are okay paying $320,000 over four years and you will not need to take on any debt to do this, or do you mean that you would prefer not to think about it?
I agree with the comment that you should add WSU to the list of schools you apply to. You might want to think about other public universities in Washington also.
@DadTwoGirls My parents are willing to pay most of it, and I’ve received 30,000 worth of scholarship. I think I’ll add WSU and UW Bothell on my list as well.
