Low GPA/decent test scores - chances? I'll bake you cookies (and chance back!)

Female, Caucasian/Middle Eastern, from a large-ish public high school in Illinois. Prospective theatre major.

GPA: 3.82 UW, 4.15 W with an upward trend
Class rank: Somewhere in the top 5% (weighted).
Courseload: 8 APs total by the time I graduate. The music/arts classes I've taken have cheated me out of a lot of challenging courses because my school is on block schedule. My counselor explains this in her rec.
ACT: 33
SAT: 2260 (780 CR, 710 M, 770 W) [I'm retaking this in January, not because I'm score-obsessed, but because my math score could and should be a lot higher.]
Honors/awards: National Merit Semifinalist, a couple of in-school choir/theatre awards.

Essays: Should be decent. I love writing and apparently have a "strong narrative voice"... so we'll see.
Teacher recs: One very, very good, the other spectacular.
Counselor rec: Honestly, probably dreadful. She can be a bit of a dragon lady.

Extracurriculars:
Theatre - 4 years (acted in eight shows, directed, and worked tech for every other show since I started high school. I plan to attach my performance resume with my Common App.)
Show choir - 4 years (500+ hrs/yr commitment, member of two national champion-level groups, featured soloist & performer)
Concert choir - 2 years
Band (top concert band, top jazz band, marching band) - 2 years (played trumpet for 7+)
Graphic/web design for a lot of school-related things - 2 years
Model UN - 1 year
Some minor volunteer work

Thanks in advance! Oh, and if you want me to chance you back, just give me a link to your thread. :)

i think u should be good at all of them Tufts, northwestern, and Brown are prob going to be the hardest but ur stats look good, however if u are applying theater isnt it more stressed on how well u perform than ur grades http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/822268-chance-me-please-ea.html

is your weighted gpa on a 5 or 6 scale?

You are in good shape for all  Btw, I’m applying to Emerson too! Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816473-chance-aa-female-elite-schools-updated-stats.html <–Include Yale also!

mvm - For schools where you have to audition to get in, yes, admissions are much more audition-based. I didn’t include the schools I’m auditioning for in this thread. The programs I’m applying to at the schools I listed are non-audition. :)

Lrn5321 - It’s on a 5.0 scale, but because it’s impossible to take a schedule of entirely AP classes, the person with the highest weighted GPA in my class has like a 4.5.

ur in NOW GIMME MY COOKIE BIOTCH

I would say that with a good essay and recs (which you say you have) I think you a pretty much 95% in at all of them except Brown. You definitely have the GPA and scores to have a shot and legacy will help you. No one is for sure in at any Ivy but you definitely have a good chance at Brown. Good luck!

Please Chance Back

I would say that you should be matched or in for all…except (of course) Brown…which is a reach, but certainly possible! If you raise the SAT, you’ll have an even better chance!
GOOD LUCK!!!
chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/822969-boston-college-chances.html

Thanks for chancing me. . .and I’m going to warn you right off the bat that I’ll be saying stuff similar to what everyone else is saying.

Northwestern= about 50/50- this school is less selective than brown but you lose the legacy hook, so I’m going to say that your chances at the 2 schools are comparable

 • Tufts=in
 • UNC - Chapel Hill (OOS)=in
 • Vassar=in
 • Brown (legacy)= again about 50/50- it’s selective but you are competitive and have the hook of being a legacy
 • Boston College=in
 • Emerson College=in
 • USC=in
 • Kenyon College=in
 • Muhlenberg=in
 • Skidmore=in

Brown and Northwestern are obvioulsy the two hardest for you but you are very competitive for both of them. You are clearly a good student and will have pretty impressive transcript to match your good ec’s, awards, and standardized test scores. That being said, being a white female will probably hurt you. . .all in all I’d say that you have as good of a shot as anybody at those two and shouldn’t worry about any of the others. Best of luck to you

probably a good shot at most of these schools. if you’re applying as a theatre major, your chances should be pretty good. for arts majors the standard unspoken ‘requirements’ are much lower.

I think you’ll be in at all, your GPA shouldn’t hurt because theater is considered a less ‘academic’ sort of major and you’ve shown your strength in theater with your ECs

chance me back :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/820193-chance-columbia-u-cc-ed-class-14-a-4.html

In vassar kenyon skidmore emerson. Tufts northwestern muhlenberg fifty fifty. Brown closer to forty percent

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/820780-will-chance-back-pineapples.html

I couldn’t find the low Gpa? But you should get in most of them.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/823241-final-chance-thread-just-sent-out-applications-will-chance-back.html

Northwestern, Tufts, UNC, and Brown are your only quasu-reaches, i would actually say that UNC will be the hardest because its OOS and they accept very few OOS students. Brown i would say you have a great shot with your legacy, Tufts is a high match, as is Northwestern. NW is maybe 50/50. Good luck!

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/818331-please-chance-me-rice-ed-i-promise-ill-will-chance-you-back-asap.html

In to basically all of them except for Brown but with the legacy you have a good shot.

Your GPA isn’t low… your SAT isn’t decent. They’re all great. Maybe not to the standards of the college you have selected…

Chance me back.

Thanks guys!! I chanced all of you back.

i’d say the only 100% one is Muhlenberg, though there are lots that are matches.

Chance me??

you seem like you have good chances for all of them.

Northwestern- match maybe a little reach

Tufts - match

UNC - Chapel Hill (OOS)- match
