Low GPA Electrical Engineering. HELP?

Can someone please give me some feedback/opinions about my current situation please?

Currently, I am a 4th year electrical engineering student. I'm on a five year plan, so will hopefully be graduating next year. Now that I'm nearing my 5th year, I have been applying to various internships. I have been nothing but shot down and rejected. My current GPA is 2.3 (most likely the reason) but I have many experiences with research and projects. I do have a reason for my GPA being that low, and it is because I am currently employed. I'm paying for my bills and have been helping my parents with their finances for the past few years. I have no options of quitting my job and concentrating on school alone. I am having a hard time balancing a job and engineering, but I do put in all my effort towards anything and everything. I'm beginning to get depressed, because although I may not look good on paper, I know that my worth ethic is just qualified as any student with a 4.0. In my cover letters, I've explained my situation... but am still getting rejected. Is being female a criteria for some employers? I know that if a job consists of heavyduty work, they prefer a male over a female.

Has anyone ever been in this type of situation before? And how have you dealt with it?

Don’t mention your gpa unless asked. Focus on your research and project experience.

This. Leave out your gpa in your resume. Go network through whatever routes you have (maybe your research sponsors or professors knows someone?). Explain your projects in full detail.
