Low GPA + Hardships

I'm in my third year at CC. I have a Transferable GPA of a 3.0 and a overall GPA (including non transferable classes) of a 2.71. I have about 6 W's ekkk...i know :( I have another year and a half before i transfer. I'm going to apply to UCSB and SDSU. I would love to go to UCLA or UCSD but thats not likely to happen. Any UC would be fine i guess but I rather not go to UCR. I'm majoring in Environmental Science or Ecology and Evolution. I will have a 3.2 after this spring semester (transferable).

So here's my story. I've gone through some hardships the past coupe of years. Coming out of high school my mom lost her job that caused me to not be able to attend my dream college :( We lost our house and ended up living at a hotel for a little while but we eventually moved into an apartment. Here's the kicker. My mom is crazy alcoholic and suffers from muscular dystrophy along with a host of other problems. For those who don't know MD is a disease where your body forgets how to make a certain protein and your muscles essentially die off. I spent alot of my time taking care of her and was in a really depressed state. The rest of my family are drug addicts expect for me lol. I don't drink or do any kind of drug. There's a whole other host of "hardships" but i don't want to bore y'all with my sob story.

Anywho.......I have a few questions.

Will schools actually take my hardships into consideration?

Will my amount of W's decrease my chances of getting in?

I need some ideas of good Schools for environmental Science in CA.

Anyone know of any scholarships for people in my situation?

What are my chances of getting in?

I just skim through your post, but whoever tell you 3.2 GPA is a bad GPA just ignore them. I mean anything above 3.5+ is just like the number, magic number, that have no particular meaning assigned to it UNLESS you are applying to ivy leagues and you’re not. Chill out…UCLA? Well, your already answered for yourself. But mang, you have to take what you get nowadays and why being picky while u don’t have that stellar grades other CC students have? IF YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE THE GRADES, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU DESERVE A SPOT AT XX SCHOOLS? opps, sorry for the caps. Caps do raging.

While your hard stats are admittedly not very strong, your personal struggles give reason to them. UCs admit holistically, and will definitely take into consideration your personal background. Personally, I would apply to UCLA and UCSD if you really want to get in. You never know, maybe the ad coms there will look favorably upon you, there’s always a sense of luck to admissions. To bring up a contrived platitude: you miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.

Only UCI, UCLA, and UCB reads personal statements.
