low gpa, high act...kelley admit?

Hi i'm a junior in hs right now and by the end of this year I will have a 3.6 Weighted GPA and a 3.14 unweighted GPA. But I have a 35 ACT score and my GPA has a huge upward trend...this semester I'm going to get a 4.6 or a 4.7.

Do I have a chance of petitioning in to get into Kelley?

Hummmm I don’t think. I had a 35 also also and a 3.62 and I wasn’t D.A. even after the petition. However I had quite the disciplinary record on my transcript.

I’d say it’s worth petitioning… IU takes the highest GPA into account when admitting students, anyway. Not sure how Kelley does it but it seems like you have enough positive attributes to make petitioning worth a shot.

You should be able to get direct admit on petition. It happens all the time with high ACT/SAT.

Yes you sound just like me. I also had a 3.1 unweighted GPA (3.7 or something weighted) with a 35 ACT. I don’t remember if they take extracurriculars into consideration, but I had soccer, a few clubs, and community service from summer programs and such. I was offered direct admit status without even knowing that they offered it, so I accepted and will be attending IU in the fall. I really never thought it was that competitive, but good luck anyway.

yeah i have a good amount of ecs and 10 APs
hopefully that will help

they only consider your highest gpa (usually weighted) and your best test score. I believe you need at least a 3.7-3.8, and then a 30 or 31 on the act to get directly admitted.

I had a 3.85 weighted and a 32 act and was directly admitted. At the direct admit day, they said the average ACT for the direct admits was a 31. even if you arent offered direct admission, you should try and petition for it. they will probably consider you if you show an uptrend in grades and that beastly ACT score of yours. good luck!

Hey, I was in the same boat as you last year. I had like a 3.4 GPA weighted with a 35 ACT, I wasn’t directly admitted. With a 35 however, I’m sure you’re capable of handling the classes. Best advice I can give is to take low credit hours and make sure you use grade distribution and rate my professors before you choose classes.

I had a 1330 and no GPA (but rather poor grades), and was offered DA after petitioning.

Ok thanks
What if I apply to Indiana priority admission and petition later when I get my first semester senior year grades? My GPA would definitely be higher.

bump?
Anyone

lilrockafella, I would just apply very early to IU, say, in August. Then, after you are accepted, which should only take a few weeks, petition to get into Kelley. Kelley has shown an overwhelminging tendency in the past, including through this past academic year, of accepting high ACT/SAT petitioners as direct admits, despite the fact that their gpa’s were mid-three point range and even lower. They do this because for years the school has been criticized for having so many kids with low standardized test scores, in fact, the lowest in the Big Ten only five or so years ago. IU has probably passed at least three schools in standardized test scores the last few years, largely because of high scorers coming to Kelley. So granting direct admit through petition to Kelley is an exellent method for IU raising their status by raising the average standardized test scores of their freshmen classes. They will view it as helping IU more than helping you by granting direct admit and helping boost their freshman class test scores.

Petition early before they have a chance to possibly let too many in via petition. In August/September, it will be way too early to project how many direct admit slots they will fill for the 2011-12 freshman class both through guaranteed and petitioned acceptances, so your chances for a “yes” will be much higher than if you do it after January, when it is more conceivable that they may cap petitioners getting in because of having too many direct admits, although you may still have an excellent chance of being admitted via petition after January with such a high ACT score.

Look at this thread for people who petitioned very late in the admissions cycle this past year and still got direct admit because of their high test scores. But I would petition as early in the year as possible, as Kelley has so many direct admits now, to the point where getting in regular admission is tougher and tougher each year:
