low GPA high SAT.. any chance for good univ

hello peeps... i have two nagging questions about this topic:
1) is there a difference in the gpa system between the US and Canada?
2) what is considered a low GPA for cornell and jhu? is a very low 90 or very high 80 considered low?
btw im a canadian, and im pretty sure that the canadian marking system is harsher than the american system (from personal experience). thx in advance
edit
my SAT IIs are: bio 800, chem 800, math IC 800
im gonna take SAT I in october, and i think im pretty much ready

Can someone name some good colleges that "weigh" SATs equally to GPA, or slightly close to GPA in term of admission factors.?

sky do you plan to apply as a international student?

how do you plan to pay
? Any scholarships?

@ collegeapplicati:
if thats directed to me lol ... yes im applying as an international student (canadian)

im same situation.

all APs and a 3.2GPA and 2100SAT plus high SATIIs.

im trying to get into UMich and I know its gonna be a struggle but for the realmofdreams i think generally any good state universities weigh SATs equally or almost. (which i s why im going for UMich)

93 gpa w/ 2150 SAT (plan to retake - shooting for 2280)
if i work hard 1st semester of senior year, 95 gpa
SAT IIs- 800 Math II, 800 USH, 790- Bio M, 780 - Chem, plan to take English Lit, EC's are good w/ solid leadership positions, hopefully good recs & essays
I'm not applying hypms, but plan to apply to some of the following:
UVA, UMICH, UNC, Cornell, JHU, Columbia or UPENN, Rutgers, BU, BC, Tufts, Northwestern, CalTech, CMU, Case Western.

Which of these do i already have on lock up and which of these should I not bother applying to ( i wrote 15, but i want 8-10)??
btw, i wanna do premed or biomedical engineering

you can make it into case...
my sister worked for admissions office and my stats are around the same as yours (my GPA is lower3.4 but my SAT is higher2290 and ACT is high34) and she thinks i could maybe get all my tuition off/full ride and be competitive for their preprof program. you could also make UMICH but thats all i know.

Anyone can make it into Case. Nobody wanted to go to that school before the tragedy and even less want to go after.

Also an 80 average probaby wouldn't have you as a 3.2 gpa at any school. It would be closer to 3.0, if you were lucky.

levin, 2100 isn't that great. So, the answer depends on what you mean by "good university." For an Ivy, a 2400 isn't even good enough to make up for a poor transcript (unless you go to an elite, ridiculously hard prep school in NY somewhere).

I have a 4.0, plenty of ECs and a 2220, and I consistently get told that any of the Ivies are a far reach for me.

koolcrud......that's just plain weird haha. What's the deal? Did you slack through school? Difficult classes? What gives?

Amen to that. The admission officers will not just look at the average number from each school when comparing applicants, but will look at how strong the school's curriculum is and how strict the grading standards are.

Maybe this might help?
GPA Conversion Chart

I go to a very competitive school and my GPA is only
3.55 (with PE etc.)
It dropped because I did not get the classes I wanted after
moving from CA to Kansas and back to CA.
Will they listen to this?

My SAT is 2290
CR- 760
M - 800
W - 730

Hey @azzajack ! I have the same exact same problem. I have an unweighted GPA with 3.6 and I moved from CA to Maryland and back, and then back again. I alternated between schools with different difficulty classes (one school was better at the Humanities, and one was better at math and sciences), levels, and grading systems. I also have a very similar SAT score. I think I’m going to address the moves in a paragraph or a few sentences in the supplemental “optional essay” part of applications.

hey im also a 3.2 uw student.
have 34 on ACT. 800 mathii, 800 chem, 800 physics, 780 bio m.
i wana apply to about 20 schools from the top 30 to top 70.
what is the chance that i can get into the top 70 schools?

This is in reference to Case Western Reserve University? What tragedy are you talking about? Does anyone have links to information about this?

hello~ (my first post!)

I’m also in same situation…
I have an average weighted GPA something around 3.8/3.9 (not including my junior year)
but currently, my junior year GPA is VERY VERY bad…
I have taken 5 AP classes so far and all honors classes (not one single regular class)
I plant to take 3 APs my senior year with ONE regular class
Im planning on getting at least a 2200 on the SAT
I havent taken any SAT IIs yet…

Any hope?

For some reason this thread gets revived yearly.

HJKL, Your grades are not nearly as mediocre as some mentioned in this thread. Keep doing well in class and do well on the SATs or ACTs. I hope you are able to match your plan of 2200.

Is GPA of 3.98 considered as good?

I think you need to start a new thread…

What is your GPA for this year and what is your new cum GPA? Your listed cum GPA doesn’t include your junior year. And, what IS your junior year GPA?

I have to tell you…schools heavily LOOK at junior year grades. Senior grades don’t count much for admittance.

What did you get on your PSAT?
