low gpa/high sat Chance me PLEASE, my GC is useless

Okay, here we go.

I'm class of 2014 and as summer approaches an end I'm really starting to get worried/stressed. My Guidance Counselor, is a piece of worthless nothing when it comes to advice and help. She really hasn't helped me through anything, hasn't given me any good advice and is horribly late with about everything. Doesn't know what shes talking about half the time. She spit out her coffee and told me Umass Boston requires a 3.5+ UW GPA, Well anyways...

I've really messed up high school, putting family issues first and school later, bad decision. I'm you're average smart student/bad family situation therefore distracting me from school, with a bit of lazy in me, but I can explain the bad grades in my college essay - without looking like the victim -.

Ethnicity: Mixed, minority blood in me
Freshman year gpa: 2.56 UW/2.71 W
Sophomore: 2.56 UW/2.96 W (more classes)
Junior : 2.41 UW / 2.62 W
SAT:2120
Class rank 389/about 950 (huge school)
I'm in all honors, 1 IB
Some community service, nothing to make the people at admissions jump out of their seat though. Got a scholarship for my standardized test scores, all being advanced.
International Amnesty club soph. + junior year
supposed to be starting ASL club senior year as pres.
work experience

So where does this leave me? I really don't want to go to CC, like I seriously will consider reclassifying if that means I have to go to CC. (probably not, even though I say this now)
I don't even know where to apply, I'm at a loss. Lets say I seriously apply myself senior year, like a straight A(+/-) first semester(don't tell me not possible, I know what I'm capable of) and a killer essay? I'm from Massachusetts
I was thinking of:

Barry University
University of Tampa
Rutgers
Umass Dartmouth
Umass Amherst (not happening, though if i applied myself junior year maybe)
BU (was my dream school, i know its not happening, just me wishing)
Suffolk University

Most of those i won't get in, if i'm correct. Can you guys suggest some schools in MA, NY, NJ, FL? Those are pretty much the only states I'm willing to go to, but I wanted to stay in MA. I used to want to go to CA but its a bit too far, family emergencies come up, etc. HELP.

Pleaaaase don’t go to Suffolk University. It is worse than most community colleges and last year the student ranked last in the class matriculated there. Go to a different school! I’d say you have a decent shot at BU and a bunch of other schools on your list. Chance me back!

Barry: Low match
Rutgers SAS/SEBS/MG: Reach (but it’s reachable)
Rutgers business/engineering/nursing/0-6 PharmD: High reach
BU: Reach
UMass Amherst: High match
UMass Dartmouth: Low match
Suffolk: Safety
U Tampa: Match

If you’re willing to go to NY, check out the SUNYs like New Paltz, Buffalo, Purchase. They want out of state students because they pay more. And these schools aren’t as tough to get into as Binghamton or Geneseo.

More like Cobleskill…

@catrina Thanks, yeah I wasn’t looking at Rutgers for those majors but thanks  I’m gonna apply to BU for the hell of it, even if its a waste of 65 dollars

@Tyler101296 Yeah but I would rather go there than like Bunker Hill or something. Suffolk is my last choice, my resort

bump I really need to know some good colleges I can apply to - if not these.

UMB definitely doesn’t require a straight-up 3.5 UW, nor does any other non-flagship UMass…if it did, pretty much nobody I know would get in. You could definitely get into UMB and UMD, and I would still apply to the Zoo because you never know. Your SAT score is great.

All SUNYs are great. It’ll get you into solid MS or MA grad schools too.

Look at Fordham.

@dancegrl Yeah, I really don’t want to go to UMB because then I’ll have to commute to school and one of my goals is to get away from home + the city I currently reside in haha. But my GC isn’t the brightest bulb, she talks just to talk and gives horrible advice. UMD isn’t exactly my dream school but I’ll be applying anyways. I heard it sucks and my cousin hated it. I’m hoping to get into the zoo ahaha everyone I know loves it there, and I fell in love the the campus when I went there for graduation!

@sksbl88 I’m weary of leaving MA, but I think change is great. I’ll probably apply there too. My goal after undergrad is NYU for law :)

I strongly suggest a year at community college to raise ur GPA. Afterwards, u could transfer to a nice university

@muhammaf9211 No, I really don’t want to, and I really won’t. With my situation + SATs I think I can get into a fairly good college already, I just want others opinions so thank you and I appreciate the advice :)

That was only my suggestion, i understand u dont want to go to CC. I wouldnt either. If u like the universities who will accept u, then why not, apply for a 4 yr. Its ur choice

Totally understandable, billion. I didn’t apply to any UMasses myself - visited UMD and hated it, knew I would be miserable at the Zoo and UML so I went with Framingham and Salem instead. Are you considering any of the state U’s? Those are definitely easier to get into and offer some scholarships. What majors are you considering?

Also, for some reason, a lot of kids at my school go to Merrimack and my dear friend who applied to Framingham and Merrimack got a large amount of merit and need-based aid - to the point where Framingham cost more per year than Merrimack. You can guess where she went. (To put it into perspective, her GPA was similar to yours, bottom 15% of our class, with a much lower ACT equivalent). If you don’t mind a Roman Catholic college (given you’re from here, there’s a 50% chance you won’t) it may be worth a shot.

I believe Fordham’s Law School is ranked higher. Reconsider them.

You want to attend NYU for law school? Here’s my preliminary piece of advice: get 3.7+ in college, get 172+ on the LSAT.

Some other good nearby colleges on the level of UMass Amherst are UVM and Syracuse University in New York. If you outline your situation to these schools I’m sure you’ll have a good shot.

Barry: Low match
dartmouth: low match

chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1535765-chance-please-i-will-chance-back.html

@dancegrl Haha why would you be miserable at Umass Amherst? I loved it when I visited. Yeah UMD is pretty miserable looking, nevermind the reviews I’ve heard about it! UML would make me miserable too. Yeah, I have a scholarship to all state schools in MA from MCAS.
