Chances at BU, BC,UMichigan,Cornell,Northwestern,NYU,JHU,Bucknell, Carnegie Mellon, Union college, College of Holy Cross, Fordham University, Emory, Tufts,Vanderbilt

To be realistic: You’re GPA is pretty low for not taking any AP classes thus far. In that respect, your SAT IIs are pretty good (boost the bio to +750) for not taking AP courses. Does your school offer the courses? Anyways, the testing is good, and you have plenty of ECs. Very involved in sports. are you trying to get into college based on sports ability?

I think that BU/BC/NYU are within range. UM/JHU/Fordham/Emory/Vanderbilt are reaches. and Carnegie Mellon/Northwestern/Cornell are going to be near impossible to get in.

It mostly comes down to your essay. Do you have any good hooks or topics or anything significant? Also it comes down to how compatible you are with the school… Good luck. What do you want to study?

I think that BU/BC/NYU are within range. UM/JHU/Fordham/Emory/Vanderbilt are reaches. and Carnegie Mellon/Northwestern/Cornell are going to be near impossible to get in.

Okay, some disagreement here with Genetic…

Your GPA will hurt you at BC and NYU, but you are okay at BU. I wouldn’t call BU a safe school, not with your GPA. Your SAT and EC’s are solid for BC and NYU; your course load seems rigorous to me- i.e. Calc BC, honors Physics? Those are “big boy and girl” classes…

You are a MATCH for Fordham. It is not in the same category for selectivity as JHU and Vandy, nor Emory and UMich (OOS) for that matter.

Chances at BU (high match), BC (low reach), UMichigan (low reach), Cornell (reach), Northwestern (reach), NYU (low reach), JHU (reach), Bucknell (high match), Carnegie Mellon (reach), Union college (match/safety), College of Holy Cross (match/safety), Fordham University (match), Emory (low reach), Tufts (low reach), Vanderbilt (low reach)

Your best bets for solid matches/safeties are: BU, Fordham, Holy Cross, and Union. This is predicated on your rather pedestrian GPA for most of the other schools on your list.

Hi! Based on the senior class '10 stats from my school, here’s what I think…

Targets: Fordham, BU (though your GPA may be a bit on the lower side), Union (but again, your GPA may be an issue), NYU (may be a bit of a reach however)
Reaches: BC, Michigan, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Tufts, and Vanderbilt

Don’t be disappointed however! Your SAT scores are at or above the average for most of these schools. The GPA may be a problem, but that is the same for me, and you should really work on excelling in your first semester classes of senior year. As long as you have shown progression throughout your 3 years of high school so far, you’re good. Work hard on your essays especially because I know essays make up a great of college admissions’ decisions.

Well depending if you apply ED/RD that will vary. The college will ask for the midterm report with all of your grades at the turn of the semester… However that’s too late for ED obviously… It will have an impact on RD most likely. (again, depending on your HS and the college which you’re applying too). In terms of raising your gpa, if you had a 4.0 the first quarter then you can get it up to a 3.55…

I agree with jshain, but i generalized a lot more…anyways back to my questions. does your school offer AP courses? that is a major thing that we all may be overlooking…

GPA is too low, unless you are within the top 10% of your graduating class. Then the GPA would be a result of just the school. If this is not the case your best bet would be to go to a lowered tiered university for two years and transfer. The test score will not make up for your low GPA, sorry. Everything you listed is pretty much a reach with your GPA. You’ll get in to 1 or 2 from that list with your current stats.

GPA isn’t all that matters, but it is an important factor. More important than your GPA is your class rank. If you are in the top 10 percent you could still have a chance. If you are an extraordinary athlete then maybe you could get recruited but I doubt you would. Your GPA would be in the athlete range though. You have a lot of clubs and other activities which would make your app look like a laundry list. You want colleges to know the real you so maybe you should cut out the ones you aren’t truly involved in. Anyways apply to the colleges. You never know what the results will be.
