Hi, I have a 3.6 unweighted GPA, and 4.0 weighted GPA. My SAT score is a 2230. HOwever, I come from a competitive high school and I am sure I am the at the top 10% of my school, but my school does not release class rank, so colleges will never know that my school undergoes serious grade DE-flation.

I also am editor in chief of my school's yearbook, I have international experience because I'm American but I've lived in the UK for a year, and I have been awarded college level diploma from the trinity college of London for piano performance. I am also solely organizing and playing in a benefit concert for Save The Children.

As this is so, what schools should I apply to? And do you think I could make it to Columbia (my dad went there for his PhD) or UC Berkeley/UCLA?

I have a 3.4 and a 32 act, same boat as you. Im worried unis will see that and think ‘slacker’

HS’s that do not rank still generally report deciles (so make sure you are in top decile before applying to Columbia because otherwise you are wasting your time) and the colleges know for the competitive HS’s what grades typically reflect in terms of rank based on past expeirence, other applicants that year from that sHS, and discussions with counselors if they visit your school). Consequently, I suspect the colleges will know your competitive school is not generous with grades.

Nevertheless, even with legacy (generally not as weighted for grad school) and ED, you are a high reach for Columbia due to just top 10% class rank. If colleges think you are in top 5%, then I’d say Coklumbia ED is a reach (10 - 33%).

Berkeley = low reach (33 - 50%)

UCLA = low match (50 - 66%)

I would add some safeties.

Also, LAC’s more likely to be happy with either really good rank or really good SAT and so, assuming you are interested in international affairs, I would not overlook schools like Claremont McKenna or Macalester.

muckdogs, thanks! I don’t think my school even reports decile ranks… although I could be wrong…I will check
