Low GPA high SAT:

Ok so here are my basic credentials:

2250 SAT
2400 SATII (math2, chem, physics)
93/100 GPA

What worries me though is that I got an 85 in AP Latin, and the focus of my whole common app essay is the classics (even though I want to go into the sciences). I already applied to Harvard SCEA... Also, my school has extremely deflated grades, so will colleges take this into account? Its not like I'm lazy or anything because I spend a ton of time doing HW, etc... Its just not fair my highschool gives out such low grades.

Also, even though I such a low GPA I'm still valedictorian out of 45 or so kids.

Will this B in Latin put me at a disadvantage... I loved Latin so much and my teacher was such a confidant for me; he even wrote my Letter of recommendation. I am literally on the brink of tears right now because I have worked SO hard for the past 4 years and now my first quarter grade, in latin is scruing me over... FML

And to top it all off some random kid who has an 17 ACT is bragging about his 95 in Spanish IV... which I could have taken... but I decided to take Latin omfg

Not at all. AP latin is a course that many students do not take and will be a great class to have on your transcript. I’m also applying to some Ivy school and I wish I took AP latin. It will definitely set you apart from many other students. Plus you have high sat scores. No college looks just at one class and says, “they cannot come to our school because of a B in an AP class”. They see that you are challenging yourself and taking an advanced class, especially language.

Yea but I’m afraid it will look like I’m slacking because I got 90s through latin I-III.

For the record I’m working my ass off, its just the teacher has a really bad way of evaluating us. He only gives pop-quizes and the questions on the pop-quizes are random vocabulary… it is so frustrating

Sheep

Basically, you’re saying that you’re class valedictorian and that you have one bad grade (which is a B in an AP course, and isn’t that bad to begin with).

If I were you – I wouldn’t worry about grade deflation in your HS. Most colleges understand that a “93” doesn’t mean the same at every school. They take this into account.

If I were you – I wouldn’t worry about the random kid with a 95 in Spanish IV. I’m assuming that this is in no way comparable to an AP course, … but even if it were, s/he isn’t getting into Harvard with a 17 on the ACT. You know, given that score, the Spanish Grade may be this kid’s shining moment in high school. Let the kid enjoy it!!

Finally – I understand what you’re going through. The Harvard Application is in. And you have that frustrating wait until you hear. Everyone is going through it.

You’ve worked hard and you should be proud of that. If you don’t get into Harvard (and let’s face it they accept <10% of their applicants, so NO ONE can count on it, you’ll get into an excellent school.

Most important – there is nothing you can do about thiings at this point. So try to enjoy your senior year and be proud of your accomplishments.
