My school doesn’t do individual ranking anymore. But I asked which has the higher importance: test scores or gpa.

As Drusba states, the College of Business conducts a full application review. Much more so than many colleges at the university. Test scores and GPA receive equal consideration in the review, but it’s not that simple. GPA trend, the makeup of the courses that went into the GPA, the essays, and the applicant’s extracurriculars all are considered, with the essays and ECs making the difference on applications where test scores and GPA diverge. If anything, I’d say GPA, which shows an applicant’s consistency, determination and effort over time holds a slight edge over test score, but that’s just my opinion.

K so do you think I have a good shot at LSA for an alternative?

Here’s what I would do. Apply to business because that is what you really want. Your ACT composite is outstanding. There is an area in the application if I recall correctly, where you can provide any other information that you think is pertinent to them making an admission decision. You need to explain the disparity between your GPA, and your test scores. Then let them make their decision. In my opinion, you’re a shoe-in for DGS, if they turn you down for Business, so you will get a chance to transfer in to your second choice at a later date.

No one’s opinion here really matters, however. You need to apply for the program you want, and don’t attempt to 2nd guess your situation. If you want business, go for it. Decide what you want to do after you receive a decision. Also, apply to other institutions, and see what they offer. I love UIUC, but there are other good alternatives out there. And good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Aight thank you

Yeah I probably will apply for business. If I get into DGS instead though, when can I transfer into the business school?

See: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12041111-post5.html

K so should I transfer before sophomore year? They’ll look at my high school record though so idk

Also I don’t think understand what alternate admission means, but is it possible to apply for business and select LAS as an alternate? Then can I transfer into business later? Because I would much rather be in LAS than DGS…

I don’t recall there being a “second choice” option on the application. Why would you rather be in LAS as opposed to DGS?

Can’t I take more economics courses there? And also isn’t it easier to transfer from LAS to business than from DGS?

DGS isn’t a college, it’s a holding pen for undeclared majors and those who don’t get into their first choice. The difficulty of transferring into a new college depends on your grades so far (and perhaps the classes you’ve already taken), NOT where you’re transferring from.

That’s an interesting definition lol. So when I’m at DGS freshman year, I can take the same classes as I would if I were in the business school right?

Do you think these business extra curricular activities would help with my application?

Attending business seminars
FBLA nationals
NSLC business program
My own computer organization that is very successful
Sales Associate for Best Buy
Internship at an investment banking firm

Maybe these could make up for the mistakes of my GPA?

Actually, my unweighted GPA might put me below the top 50% class percentile rank. Does UIUC look at the percentile bands even though my high school doesn’t provide individual ranking? Do I still have a chance for DGS? The UIUC admissions webpage states that the middle 50% admitted to DGS were in the top 80-93%…

You will for sure get in :)

I think you can get into UIUC for sure, but maybe have to transfer

Thanks

By transfer do you mean transfer from another school to UIUC or from DGS to business?

i’m still a bit skeptical though…because I don’t think anyone gets accepted to UIUC with a 50% class rank

Business school at U of I is very competitive to get in. You have chance to get into U of I, but getting accepted into business school is not that easy based on your current GPA.

not gonna happen

yeah i know i probably won’t get into business but do I have a good chance of them accepting me to DGS?
I can transfer into business at a later time.
