My school calculates weighted GPA, and mine is 3.94. Unweighted is probably 3.3. Yeah, I’m mostly a B+ student with a fefw As.
I’m trying to balance my low GPA with high level classes (hardest schedule possible at my school), lots of extracurriculars (volunteering is my big thing), and a 1550 SAT with 23 essay. My high school is very competitive, and I’m in the top 20%. I also need a lot of scholarships as my efc is 0. Also I am an Asian female majoring in Bio
I’ve applied for some really top schools like UPenn (ahhhh), but I know that’s not realistic. My question is: what would an adcom think of a student like me? My grades and scores say that I’m lazy, but I do have family circumstances that I’ve mentioned have affected my academics.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
Do you have any safeties? That means schools that you will get excepted and you can afford? What percent of your school normally gets into the meets full need schools? If it is 5%, you have issues. If it is 20% you may be in a better spot. Don’t overvalue your test scores. I think most would consider GPA to be first among equals when it comes to college acceptance.
It’s hard to know what any given adcom will think of you. I think some of it will depend on your family circumstances that caused (?) your lower grades. The top schools turn down many kids with 4.0 UW GPAs, lots of APs and ECs, with high SATs.
Your best course of action would be to write stellar essays and apply to other schools as well that are not as highly not as ranked but also provide full aid (google this for a list of full needs schools).
Also, look into your state schools. They tend to be less expensive and, depending on the school, may provide merit aid using your weighted GPA and test scores. In our state, that merit covers tuition, and can cover room and board (separate application).
Re above post, I should have said schools that have higher acceptance rates, not that aren’t as highly ranked.
