Low GPA, Lots of APs

Hello! I have taken about 9 APs up to date: 3 sophomore year and 6 junior year but ended with a 3.6 unweighted and 4.1 weighted due to extenuating circumstances outside of school my counselor will speak about.

Good extracurriculars, 33 ACT

Where have you all gotten with stats like these?
Would these schools accept me:
Brandeis, Barnard, Macalester, Swarthmore, Emory, Duke

Duke and Emory probably not.

How is a 3.6 GPA at your school?

Google Common Data Set and look at section C to see how you compare.

I go to a competitive well-known public high school

If you are at a particularly competitive HS I would suggest that your best information would come from discussions with your guidance counselor and looking at Naviance if your HS has that available.

In terms of your “extenuating circumstances” I will add that: 1) each admission officer will have his/her own take on them and 2) there is not enough information to give anyone an idea of what they were and how they might have impacted your work/grades.

Keep in mind that GPA is but one part of an application. Your course rigor appears strong --the important thing is that your guidance counselor check the box in the recommendation saying you have taken the most rigorous courseload available at your HS. I would advise you to spend time developing strong essays and to choose your teacher recommendations wisely.

Like many HS students you seem to be focused on reach schools. IMO it is even more important that you spend time seeking out match and safety schools that both appear affordable (run net price calculator) and that you would be excited to attend. Trust me – they are out there if you look for them.

Competitive well known doesn’t answer my question. At some fitting that description you would be in the top 10%. In others you may not be in the top half.

It may matter less at some if you did really well on the AP exams. Agree that Duke and Emory are the most likely to be put off. It also depends on your high school. At ours, a 3.6 UW would be a very good outcome.
