Low GPA Top Colleges I chance back?

ello all here are my various college related things

Rank: Decile 2 but this will not be posted for colleges

Pennsylvania

UW GPA: 3.3
W GPA: 4.0

Upward trend, 3.16, 3.16, 3.5, 3.6ish+?

All Honors and AP Classes. National AP Scholar with Honors.

I had moderate to severe test anxiety. Did not go to doctor or anything, but I wrote about how this effected my test taking and thus my GPA. Essentially tried saying that my low GPA was not due to a lack of effort.

SAT I: Math-770 CR- 780 Writing-700
SAT II Math II: 750
SAT II Chem: 720

ECs... I could go into more detail, but let's just say that it is solid with sports, music, some voluteer work, and some leadership. Not spectacular... the only thing a little interesting is a started the Asian Culture Club at my school and worked in the ghettos with my dad (I live in the suburbs).

Ethnicity: Asian- I realize this will hurt for most colleges, but whatever. It will be obvious what my race is from my ECs...

High School Type: Public-not good at getting kids into top ivy calibre schools because it is too new. Opened in 2003? But well ranked and competitive.

School List:

Notre Dame-Reach, the parchment said I have a 79% chance but that must be BS.

UNC- Chapel Hill- Low Reach-Once again I realize I'm OOS and low GPA... But the graphs seem favorable

University of Michigan- the SAT/GPA graphs seem to show a favorable chance for me. The parchment chanced be at 85%, but I do not know. I realize my GPA is really low and I'm OOS, but the graph looks good...University of Michigan - GPA and Test Scores Needed for Admission

Penn State Honors-? SAT is not considered. I heard it is mainly the essays?

CMU- Match/Low Reach
Emory- My counselor thinks that I will get in, but my GPA says otherwise
Indiana University Kelley prefered admit- Match
Babson- Safety/Match
Wake Forest-Match

Drexel- Safety
Temple- Safety
Penn State- Safety

Ouch… no replies… bump

I think all of them are matches except for notre dame, penn state, UNC chapel hill, and michigan! Good luck! Chance back plz

Penn State is a low match to match (they like high test scores), the honors college is a reach, CMU is also a reach (more so for some programs then others), as well as Notre Dame and UNC. Drexel and Temple are safeties as you said, sorry I can’t speak to the others…

might also look at holy cross-january 15th application due date.

Notre Dame and PennState are slight reaches. Emroy seems like a low match, your stats aren’t stellar, so yeah…
Otherwise, you seem to be a good applicant. Good luck!

Your own evaluation is off. Your GPA is going to kill you. Top schools practically ONLY take students at the top 10% of their class and although 2 decile won’t be posted, it is way too low to be top 10%. These schools average only like 5-15% not top 10%, including athletes, VIPs (donors), URMs, legacies…

That being said…
CMU, Notre Dame, UNC=High Reach (<10%)
Emory=reach (30%)
Wake Forest/Penn State honors= low reach (40%)

Thanks for all the replys… Just a note… if you want me to chance back please post a link to your thread otherwise I can’t find it.

Wallrus, what about being in a public school that is pretty good? It’s very difficult to get an A in Honors Analysis for example and very very few people have As in BC Calc, but people who get Cs in BC Calc go on to get 5s on the exam? I’m in AB Calc and I have an A, but that is just for illustration purposes.

Also I see people from other schools with 4.0s unweighted with only a 2000 SAT in hard classes. But on the other hand, everyone in the hardest classes even with low GPAs still have 2100+ SATs in my school. Isn’t that indicative of academic rigor and thus lower GPA?

Oh and what about University of Michigan?

I agree with your chances except for Wake and CMU… One of the reasons why I applied to CMU is because a whopping 20%ish of the enrolled freshmen had GPAs below 3.5. I was hoping that being in the bottom 20% for GPA but top 10% for SAT would give me a decent chance.

For the SAT/GPA graphs for Umich and UNC I seem to be in a favorable area. Of course, I do not know if they are in state or out of state. I think being out of state will make UNC a reach, but I feel as though I still have a decent chance for U Mich.

Can you please give me the link of your thread? Otherwise I won’t be able to find it.

Oh, I’ve also visited UMich and CMU if that means anything. Michigan is a significant drive from PA.

Notre Dame-Reach
UNC- Chapel Hill- Reach
University of Michigan- Low match
Penn State Honors-match
CMU- Match/Low Reach
Emory- Reach
Indiana University Kelley prefered admit- Match
Babson- Match
Wake Forest-low match
Drexel- Safety
Temple- Safety
Penn State- Safety

GPA may be a little low, but great SATs and extracurriculars! You look like a great candidate for admission!

As for why some people have high GPAs but not super high SAT scores (and you have to remember that a 2000 is high, I believe it puts somebody at around the 90th percentile) is they simply are not great at standardized testing. A GPA speaks to your day to day academic performance, your scores speak to whether or not you excelled on one Saturday.

Really CMU is a high reach, also you have to remember that you are Asian (Asian = ORM) and CMU in particular has Asians as over-represented currently, if I had to guess those who are getting in with less then a 3.5 are probably mainly minorities or hooked applicants.

Living in Michigan, I’d say you have a fair chance at U of M. Your GPA isn’t great, and your writing score is pretty low, but I know people who have gotten in with lower…

You also live in Michigan. It is significantly easier for instate kids.

I’m talking about people from out of state…

Thanks for the insight BYgirl and the chance ABC!

Also, thank you everyone elsefor all your input. Artsygirl, I think for most of my applications I did not state race. HOWEVER, I did say that I started the first and only “ethnic cultural club” at my school. Did not say Asian culture club, but a quick search on my school’s website will clearly show that it is an ASIAN cultural club.

I believe I talked about being an immigrant in some of the essays… from Singapore. Singapore is probably worst than other countries though… Richer than most Asian countries although my family is not rich (my dad is a pastor), but it won’t matter cause people generalize…

I would say Carnegie, ND, and UNC are all low reaches. Michigan and Emory are not mid reaches. Please chance me back!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1437136

I’m in a similar boat to you with gpa

Slacker, You would have been a perfect candidate for Vanderbilt ED1, with your scores you were in on Dec 15th. I think you have a very good chance in Notre Dame. Others except CMU should be easy too. Good Luck.

Fatherofm

Vanderbilt does not have a business school unfortunately :frowning: and I heard their economic school is not up to rigor. Thanks though, I think I’ll need some luck :p

DKline, what do you mean that they are not mid reaches? Is that in a good way or a bad way?
