Low GPA Transfer to UC Berkeley

Hi everyone,
I was looking for blunt responses what is the possibility of my transferring to UC Berkeley
My gpa is 3.4-3.5 ish hoping to major in math.
Hope spring eternal…I’m hoping my personal statement/Extra Curricular somehow pulls me through because Berkeley pays attention to that and because I hear math isn’t impacted. I know 2 pages will not make up for two community college years worth of work ethic but I’m hoping that I hear some success stories. But please be honest and blunt.

Thanks

Berkeley definitely accepts applicants in your GPA range if they’re impressed enough by your extracurriculars and personal statement.

If you think yours were good enough, and if they were good enough, you’ll be a competitive applicant.

Hey Cayton and Thesnapster I am also curious about this. However, about both UCLA and Berkeley. I have a 4.0 so far (but 9 Ws…and yes I have reasons). I Started taking Calculus this quarter. My IGETC will be completed after this current and upcoming quarter. I am struggling because this is my first quarter as a full time student and I travel 5 hours a day to get to community college (eye sight issues. Use the bus). I wonder if I do not do well (B grade) in Calc 1 if I have a chance to attend UCLA if I do well in all other courses? Please and Thank You

Thanks @Cayton! and @zerglindude one B won’t define you but make sure to mention your commitment when you write your application! I actually applied last year as a different major and got accepted with a B in Calc 1 (Although I had TAP) Make sure you ask your honors office about TAP

You’ll be fine with the B because you will already be accepted (yes!). I hope you mentioned your five hour ride and eye issues. If not, throw it into comments in the TAU.

hi guys I’m also someone who applied to Berkeley for math. My story is a little odd. Im a first year student attending UCI and i would like to transfer to cal on my fist year. but idk if my gpa is good. I started with Multivariable Calc and i ended with a C+. Ill be taking Linear Algebra and Discrete Math this spring quarter and diff. equ. on the summer. I will also finish my GEs this spring. i ended with a 3.059 for the fall and a 3.108 this winter. But the reason is because i play guitar for my church and it takes a great chunk of my time since i have to bus it from Irvine to Downey (thats 3hrs). This activity is really important to me and i was not willing to drop it. I’m also in student government for UCI. I’m in the Engineering Student council. My essays were really good (according to my english professors). do i have a shot at berkeley’s math program? i will be a junior by the end of this spring.

Usually students around that GPA range are not admitted. Even if the essays are strong.

I’m sorry, but this is the hard truth: first, UCB is the least likely to take any UC-UC transfer; second, your GPA is just too low; and third, saying that playing guitar for your church group is more important than your GPA is like throwing sand in Berkeley’s eyes. That reason will never fly with them.

You’re at UCI. It’s a great school. I would just finish it out and be happy. Although I am going to say, you may need to make a choice regarding your guitar and studies, at least for the next two years.

@lindyk8 its not that i find being part of the worship service more important, its that its something that I’ve worked for since i was in 10th grade. i couldn’t just drop it. obviously I’m making a sacrifice to have some activities outside schools beside student government. So theres not even one chance i can get in? btw I’m a first year who will reach junior status by this spring, I’m not a second year

@ioplkjnm‌ first of all, I respect that you like playing guitar in the church group. It shows commitment, and obviously you are getting a lot of solace and it’s a creative/emotional outlet. It’s just that, as you said, it’s taking a big chunk of time and your GPA is 3.1. I just don’t see it with Berkeley, but maybe I am wrong. It seems like you’ve done a lot of things right. But GPA has floundered. If you look at UCLA transfer stats from last year, the various math majors had an average admitted GPA of 3.68-3.88. And Berkeley tends to be higher.

For what it’s worth, sometimes people who transfer, whether UC-UC or CCC-UC, often after arriving at their dream school, it goes down a few pegs. I am serious when I say while Irvine is not Berkeley in overall calibre, it truly is a phenomenal school. Maybe you need to look at it with fresh eyes. You can always consider grad school.
