I started college at csu where I was super miserable and got depressed, and failed all my classes except one that was an easy pass(a 0.036 gpa). after having time to reflect and get help, i have slowly been rebuilding myself back up. i transferred to a community college and I have been taking courses, maintaining a 4.0 gpa and of the 3 courses that I failed at the csu, I am taking one of them now and am guaranteed to get an A. I did the math and bc of the two classes I failed, I will have a overall of 3.2 by the fall admissions come around. However, by the time I finish fall semester, if everything goes according to plan (I’m pretty sure I can pull all A’s again) I will have a 4.0.
The reason I ask this is because I am a comp sci major and most of the colleges require 3.3+ gpas which I will be able to meet at the end of fall semester, but because I don’t meet it at the time of the actual admission time, does that mean I can’t apply?
Are you targeting the Cal states and/or the UC’s for transfer? Which schools are you specifically looking at that require a 3.3+ for transfer as a CS major? Are you planning to TAG?
Congratulations on overcoming a really difficult situation.
You can always apply. When the time comes, speak with an admissions counselor at the school(s) you’re really interested in and tell them your story.
im not sure if i can tag and im aiming for ucs. i wanna be able to apply to a lot bc i finsihed high scool with a 4.4 gpa and a 1520 SAT and i still got rejected from all the UCs except UCR and UCM which i did not want to attend
I would check to see if you are eligible for TAG since UCR, UCRM and UCSC only need a 3.0 GPA and 30 semester units at the time of application which is end of September. UCD no longer allows TAG for CS (2022 admission cycle) and UCSB/UCI removed TAG consideration for CS also.
TAGing we give you at least 1 of the 3 UC’s as a guarantee.
Below is the TAG matrix for 2021, so there may be changes when the new matrix is posted this summer.
I would probably also add a few Cal states to your list especially your local in-service area CSU as backup. CS is a very marketable major so you do not have to attend a UC specifically to get a well paying job post graduation.
Best of luck and I will be moving this discussion into the UC Transfer forum.
For the 2022 admission cycle, CS is no longer part of UC Davis TAG.
“ The UC Davis Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is a written agreement that guarantees admission to UC Davis in a specific major from any California community college (CCC). Beginning Fall 2022 Computer Science will be closed to TAG.”
