I just finished my junior year, and am currently in the first semester of my senior year. I really screwed up my junior year due to social/family problems, and I'm really worried about what colleges I can get into. I wanted to get into a UC, but I just realized that I am not eligible.

My overall GPA is 2.675, and my UC GPA is 2.82.
My SAT score is 1660, however, that is with absolutely no studying, and I still plan to take it a second time and get 2000+.

As for extracurriculars...

I am the president of our schools philosophy club.
I am vice president of our schools science olympiad team.
I have been in Academic Decathlon for the past 2 years.
I have had private lessons for guitar, trumpet, and the ukulele, and have been playing all three since Junior High.
I take Japanese language classes outside of school on Saturdays out of my own interest.
I have been practicing Kendo for a little over a year.

What colleges do you think I can get into (in California)? Is there any way I can get into a lower-tier UC like Merced or Riverside?

I'm already doing very well my senior year and have all A's so far. I am taking 1 AP and 1 Hrs class this year. Will colleges take that into account?

Dude, I’m sorry but the grades are abysmal and 1600 sat is not stellar either. Even after studying a 400+ jump is not always feasible (also considering the time constraint). Try community college and then transfer. But apply nonetheless!

It’s time to look beyond the UCs for other options, and there are still plenty of great schools that would welcome you.
What are your academic interests?
Will you be applying for financial aid?

Try New Mexico Tech. I got in with a 3.116 WEIGHTED GPA… I had a 32 on my ACT though. If money is an issue, UCs’ tuition is skyrocketing. NMT’s tuition for OOS is around $15k

You should have a good appointment with your guidance counselor. He/she will be familiar with other students who have has similar stats as yours and can suggest a suite of colleges for you to consider. Also be prepared to discuss what you & your family can afford.

At this point, do not sacrifice school work and test prep for your ECs. Your EC involvement will NOT be evaluated by any college you’re targeting. Continue them if you so desire, but they won’t assist you (and indeed can hinder you) in getting into any college. Seriously.

Take your CSU GPA (should be the same as UC GPA), multiply by 800, and add your SAT CR+M to get the CSU eligibility index.

2900 or higher gets you into unimpacted CSUs as an in-state applicant. For impacted CSUs, it depends on the campus and major. San Jose State is among the more transparent of the CSUs in showing what eligibility index was needed for each major for the previous admissions cycle, so you can get an idea of your chances, based on major:

To get into a UC, your best chance is to go to community college, take courses listed at [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for your major(s) (you can do so at more than one community college, in case the needed courses are not all available at one), and then apply to transfer as a junior. Some UC campuses do have an transfer acceptance guarantee program if you meet some minimum GPA in community college.

If you need a lot of financial aid, then doing the CC route with TAG to a UC is probably your best bet.

What CC is near you? Some in Calif are excellent.

Going OOS or to privates will not likely result in getting any needed aid since your stats will not likely yield merit scholarships or a preferential FA package. Even a school with a lowish OOS tuition cost would be hard to attend without merit and great FA…which you won’t likely get.

However, if your parents will pay for wherever you go, we can offer some choices.

I am going to be the bad apple here and say DO NOT got to CC route anymore in California. Due to the budget cuts, the CC are overcrowded and I know several people who could not attend the local CCs because they were full, especially those classes for ASSIST. They are overcrowded, poor and personally, not work betting on anymore. Times have changed especially in California.
