I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’m worried that my GPA is a little low. I’m currently pulling about a 3.1 unweighted and weighted. I haven’t taken any honors or AP courses, but I’m taking honors history next year. I also plan on taking AP Psychology and AP Music Theory my senior year. I managed to get a 1050 on the PSAT’s without studying, and I’m hoping to raise that to around 1300-1400 when I take the actual SAT’s. I wanted to major in theater and/or music education. Do you think I have a chance at getting into any good schools?
My understanding of music/theater is that your portfolio and resume is a major part of your application. Without that info, it is hard to say. Also, we would need to know whether your schedule is considered difficult or not at your particular school ie how many honors/APs are offered. That being said, your stats are pretty low but you have next year and first half of senior year to turn it around. I would definitely focus strongly on studying a ton for the SAT because a 1300-1400 might not cut it given your current GPA.
It also depends on how competitive the university you apply to. The more competitive the university is the more they want to see from you. GPA is important but it’s not the only thing they look at. You’re still a sophomore so you have time to pull up your gpa and improve your SAT score. Try to be involved with school clubs and other extracurricular activities. Stay focus and don’t lose hope!
