I currently have a 3.6 GPA and a low SAT score, it was my first time and I didn't prepare for it at all. What are my chances of getting into JMU or UVA? Any help is appreciated.

be specific....

Are you in-state? Any more stats to share?

It probably depends what "low" is.

I'm in state. My current SAT score is 1300 and it was my first time taking it so I kind of just blew it over. I want to go into a field of Medical. My current classes that I'm taking are:

AP Biology
Trig and Math Analysis Honors
Spanish 4 Honors
Chemistry Honors
Va and US History Honors

I have B's in all my classes right now, but next semester I will surely step it up a notch. What other information is needed?

1300/1600 or 1300/2400?

It would be 950/1300.

Wow. It's not your 'low' GPA that is the big problem, because a 3.6, while not high, isn't too shabby. But you got a 1300/2400.. that's really low, far too low for UVa. I'm not familiar with JMU.

In order to be considered competitive, you should really retake those SATs. If you don't get in, it won't be because of a 3.6 GPA.

hahaha, I know about my SAT scores. =P I'm definitely going to take them over again. This time I'll actually concentrate.

edit: I looked at my score and my score wasn't 1300. it was 1450.

Have you tried ACTs yet? Some people who perform poorly on the SATs perform better on SATs. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the information everyone. Made me feel a bit better. =]

I used the collegeboard Blue Book with the "Real Sat's" and raised my reading score up from 630 to 760 and got a 36 in ACT reading, the key is to read the passage, answer the questions, and for whatever you get wrong, go over the question and think how you would "think" to get the right answer. If you can think like the makers of the test, you are bound to beat it. Good Luck. Can't offer advice for math except to practice practice and practice, I was naturally good at it. Sorry.

UVA is really sketchy: I heard a lot of their decisions this year are based upon race ( They're trying to add diversity to their class). So a lot of your cultural background goes into consideration. 3.6 isn't bad, not at all, could use improvement. The SAT is pretty low, but you can retake it.
JMU: This seems like a better chance, According to Collegeboard their acceptance rate is in the high to mid 60 percent rates.

My tips are just to finish your senior year off superbly.

And you said you want to go medical?
If you're in state, VCU's MCV is a GREAT medical school.
seriously.

I don't know about JMU but with your stats, it would a difficult/impossible reach for UVA unless you're an uber extra-curricular or uber sports talent. I don't know about how schools might use cut-offs but I think a 1300/2400 or even a 1500/2400 is extremely low and might not give your application a full view at certain schools.

Advice: Get a Tutor For the SAT! I would raise the grades, a "B" looks terrible on a secondary school report and a mid-year report to college. It would give them the impression that you are a slacker.

However, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
