My son is a freshman this year (going for BME major). He had some problem with his math103 in the first 1-2 month although he said he overcomed it after then. He only got 3.3 GPA for first semester with C for his Math103. Is it common in Duke? How bad his current GPA is? Does this affect his future medical school application?

Well, a 3.3 is a B+ average. So if you think of it that way it’s fine…a B+ is nothing to be ashamed of as a Duke student, particularly a first semester BME student. And if he got a C in Math 103, but still had a 3.3 I’m assuming he did well in all his other courses so he probably just hit a rough patch with that class.

In other words, don’t sweat it! A 3.3 is not a bad GPA…and although it does seem relatively low compared to other medical school applicants a) BME is a tough major as is any engineering degree, and b) he has PLENTY of time to bring it up. First semester is tough…I don’t know many math/science people who escaped their first semester without one low B or C.

3.3 isn’t a low GPA for a Duke BME.
