Low Grades and Strong EC's at HYPS

I'm a junior planning on applying to HYPS next fall, but I am slightly worried about having a relatively low GPA.

My GPA is around a 3.80 unweighted, having taken only Honors, AP, and IB classes in high school (named National AP Scholar with Honor as a sophomore), but I have strong extracurriculars and strong test scores.

To talk a little about my EC's, I've co-founded two successful nonprofits that have garnered national recognition. In my sport, I placed in the top 5 at the World Championships twice, and am looking to qualify for the Olympic Trials this summer. I have also been involved with scientific research throughout high school. There are more major awards and details, too, that I wish not to mention due to people potentially recognizing who I am.

Would I still have a shot at these schools even with my low GPA?

Your GPA isn’t that low. These schools admit kids with nonperfect GPAs all the time as long as they can prove themselves capable in other areas. Just don’t let it drop further, keep doing what you’re doing, and write good essays and you’ll have just as much of a chance as anyone else will.

Since we know nothing about the academic rigor of your school, calling a 3.80 GPA “low” is both off-putting and disingenuous.

Assuming you have strong tests scores, amazing recommendations, killer essays, and top-notch references, you have the same 6% chance as the rest of us. Good luck.

GPA 3.8 at your school may be better than 4.0 at other school.
