I am a sophomore from a small town in Northern Michigan. I have about a 3.6-3.7 overall non-weighted GPA, because I am TERRIBLE at taking trimester final exams. Princeton is number one overall need to do dream. What can I do to get in?? Right now I am at about 15% of my class, hopefully will go up. I take all AP and Honors, except math. I will have 4 years of Spanish under my belt.

Here are a few other things I am involved with.

Model UN, I win a ton of awards at our conferences.
Debate, again, I earn a fair amount of awards. (going to the MSU debate camp this summer)
Varsity Cross Country ski, will have 1 year JV and 3 varsity when I graduate and will probably be captain.
2 years Varsity football
Spanish club, probably will be president my senior year
yearbook, I can't do the actual editing and work next year, but I will be taking pictures
Key club
NHS
I have been employed at the same location for about 4 years, my boss is from New Jersey and said he can try to help me out as much as he can.

I took my SAT 2 in world history this year, since I took AP world. I plan on taking my first SAT this October and our whole school takes the ACT next March.

Princeton is my dream school!! Everyone says I have no shot, but I really want to go there! What can I do??

Alright, I am taking AP US gov, AP English Lang and Comp, AP bio (probably, may have to take full year honors physics) Algebra 2, Spanish 3, extended math, either an extra English or a sociology class, and independent studying hebrew and AP comparative politics.

What kind of SAT/ACT scores would I need to get into Princeton with these grades?? Also, I am considering writing my essay on my struggles with Crohn’s disease, I was diagnosed when I was twelve and I have just recently gone into a well enough remission to be able to do my EC’s and such. Also, I am going to the Neatherlands for a short period next year, as part of an exchange program and plan to spend my summer studying IR through JSA at Princeton or Georgetown and going to the Princeton football camp.

My model United Nations wouldn’t be considered a hook? I was the first Freshmen to ever take highest honors in committee at the Mid-American Model United Nations. Out of eight conferences I have taken highest honors four times, and second honors twice, with one second best delegation and one best delegation.

With your supposed awards, do the best you can; but, let’s face it, if you were so sure of yourself, you would probably not be posting this q. Your extra curriculars sound impressive, but that is not the only thing they take into account. Fortunately you have some time to turn your grades around, so, turn 'em around.

It’s not really a hook because plenty of kids who apply to Princeton have won numerous accolades via extracurriculars like Model Congress/U.N. In other words, it’s not something Princeton “needs,” and it’s not the most unique thing in the world.

tcwest, the important thing to recognize is that being the best at MUN in your whole school does you little good as a deal breaker. Keep in mind that out there, in other MUN branches, there are many who are better than you at MUN. GPA is your greatest adversity as of now, so work on that. You don’t need a 4.0, but get at least 3.9+

tcwest - a hook is being an under represented minority, the child of a Princeton grad or a heavily recruited athlete. You sound like an exceptional young person, but unfortunately so are the other 25,000 kids who will apply to Princeton. Don’t give up your dream, but don’t give up your high school years either.

For the class of 2014 more than 9,820applicants had a cumulative 4.0 grade point average; about 13,650 had a combined score of 2,100 or higher on the three sections of the SAT. Applicants with less than a 4.0 grade point average or less than 2,100 SAT need to be outstanding in some EC to stand out and receive serous consideration. Princeton has so many outstanding applicants that the university accepts students with high grades, high SAT’s and good ECs.
You should work hard on getting straight A’s , score 2,300+ on your SAT’s, and try for state or national recognition in debate. Consider using your Spanish language skills. Travel to Costa Rica. Work in your community to help Hispanic families. If Rich Rodriguez offers you a football scholarship this summer your chances will improve significantly. Unless your boss is related to Shirley Tilghman I doubt that he can help very much.

I know a lot more qualified people than me don’t make it in, but I am hoping that I can pull it off!! Also, how much of a minority would one need to be for it to be considered? I am 1/8 American Indian and so was wondering about that. If I can nail the interview and the essays, do I still have a shot? I am great at talking with people, especially those older than me, and I have a few good ideas for essays.
