Low Graduation Percentage

Why does THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY have such a low graduation %? Is it because a lot of students are expelled or are they stupid?

In no way is this supposed to be mean, I just like Buckeye sports and want to know why the graduation rate is low (well 68% over 6 yrs seems low to me)

This news article says the rate is about average: [Ohio aims to boost college graduation rate | The Columbus Dispatch](http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2010/03/03/ohio-aims-to-boost-college-graduation-rate.html)

I think public schools will often have lower numbers. Schools like OSU are trying to attract minority and first-generation students, the article also says, who are most likely to drop out after the first year.

The current rate is 73%. The above poster nailed it. Ohio State has done an excellent job of, despite very selective admissions standards, maintaining a high level of socio-economic diversity. Ohio State has a significantly higher percentage of first generation college students and lower percentage of students coming from $100K income families than the national averages for selective public universities.

Such students have been statistically shown to graduate at slower rates than students with similar incoming class rank and test score stats who are coming from upper middle class families where the parents are college graduates.
