In the UW booklet for high school students, it states that the graduation rates for the 2005 entering class is 80% in 6 years, 76% in 5 years, and 54% in 4 years.

I am wondering why are only 54% of the class able to graduate in four years?

part of it may not have to do with “able to” but “want to”. I have several friends who’ve taken time off to travel for a year.

Also, on the other end of the SES spectrum I have friends who’ve had to take time off to work and save up money to keep going.

In some cases, classes that are required for the major are not available every quarter…and if you miss it, you have to take it the following year.

I personally have been thinking of going an extra quarter (which would bump me to the next year level) just out of want…I have all my required credits and am currently just taking electives. I’m thinking of going to graduate school and there are some prereqs i need to get done if I want to do that for my intended major

In addition to what travelgirl said, some people keep changing majors. Some people also double, triple, or even quadruple major. It’s almost impossible to finish school in 4 years if you triple major. If you double degree (two colleges instead of the same one, like arts and science + engineering), then you automatically are expected to complete your education in 5 years.
