This is ridiculous. It says I was not awarded Cal grant and it does not even tell me specific reasons as to why I was not awarded, even on cal grant website the webgrants for student page -_-

Help me figure out why!! and what is "Net Worth" on Webgrants for student page and on "Award Detail" tab? Please help me!! thanks

BUMP I really need help

call them. can’t really help you. sorry! =(

Do you have green checks for both the FAFSA and your GPA verification on the “Application Status” tab? I have never seen a “net worth” tab. As naixn92 says, give them a call or email to ask what the problem is. Good luck!

alamemom, Yes there was two green checks I believe.

On “Award Detail” tab, you click that and go to the bottom, there’s a little bold letters that say “net worth” Sigh… i just got rejected from UCLA and now Cal grant’s hating on me…

What is the GPA that was sent in from your school?

Does your family have savings or investments? I think there is an asset cap for the cal grant as well as an income cap (wondering if that is what the “net worth” tab is about?). I think a couple years ago the asset cap was around $59,000.

Hmmm… they haven’t done ours for this year yet, so there is no info under award detail, and I checked last year, but there is no net worth tab there. I don’t know if it is new, or is an indication of being over the asset ceilings.

Here are the income/asset ceilings for Cal Grant this year http://www.csac.ca.gov/facts/2010-11IncomeCeilings.pdf With a 0 EFC, I would think you would qualify - I don’t think they use any info beyond the FAFSA and GPA to make the determination. Email today and call on Monday and see if you can get an answer. missemily has a good point - what GPA do they list?

I am very sorry about UCLA. You are going to have lots of great choices in a few weeks - don’t think about UCLA after today.

The asset ceiling is $62,000 on the link alamemom posted. It is possible to have a 0 EFC and have assets of $62,000 if you qualified for the automatic 0 EFC or simplified needs test where assets are not considered, or if parents aid based asset protection is over that amount.

Did you get the prompt on the FAFSA saying you were not required to list assets, but chose to list them anyway?

Does CA allow that alamemom? Not all states do. In our state we are required to list assets and do not get the option to not list them even if we qualify for simplified needs or automatic 0. No idea why as our small ($1000) State need based grant is based only on the EFC (1700 or below).

I have not seen anything in the Cal Grants materials saying you have to list assets if you meet the simplified needs test, but neither have I seen anything saying you do not so I’m not sure. I hadn’t really thought about it until I saw this question - I started wondering if the OP might have had assets that did not affect the EFC but made them ineligible for Cal Grant.

Another thought that just occured is that Cal Grant ceilings are the same regardless of the number of family members or number in college - are there siblings, some of whom are attending college? (Cal Grants are based on Income/Assets, not EFC)

P.S. I had to go back to the top and be sure we were talking about Cal Grants when I saw Texas in your answer!

I have no idea why I put Texas (I changed it). I think I need to go to bed!!

It might not say anything in the Calgrant materials, but as they do consider use asset data when awarding the Calgrant I am guessing perhaps CA residents do not have the option of excluding it. FAFSA does not always give the option of omitting the asset data. It depends on your state of residence. As mentioned above, our state does not give us an option to omit asset data even when we qualify for automatic 0 or simplified needs.

We were given the option to exclude assets this year for the first time (a REALLY bad year, but we are surviving!), but we went ahead and listed them - I didn’t even think at the time about Cal Grant - I just figured D is at a Profile school and they would see the assets anyway. Since they give the option to exclude to California applicants at California schools (like us), maybe excluding is okay in California?

So they do give the option for CA residents? Interesting. I wonder how they determine Calgrant applicants assets.

Makes it even weirder that our state does not allow the option as our teeny grant (which is nonetheless much appreciated) does not consider assets, only the EFC.

Samdawitness…

Did you apply to any nearby Calif schools? If so, can you visit one of their FA offices and ask them about your Cal Grant issue? Bring all your paperwork with you. When they see what you have, maybe they can figure out what is wrong and help correct any mistakes.

Good luck!

WAIT WAIT WAIT! you have the option of not listing assets? CA residents can you please confirm on that please???

You only have the option if you were given the option when completing FAFSA. There are some things that will trigger that option for some people (we qualify for the automatic 0 EFC and still have to provide the asset data). If you were not given the option to not provide asset data then you have to provide the asset data.

I made a mistake in the innitial completing process and now my EFC’s down to 0…

“91. What is the net worth of your parents’ current businesses and/or investment farms as of the day you submitted your FAFSA?”

Can I skip that question or put 0 or something?
