Low income Financial Aid question... a little confused....

@kgos16 Thanks a lot for the advice. Im wondering though…if I take 12 units a semester towards my major, instead of just taking the remaining 5 units, when I transfer to a UC for example, wouldn’t I just spend less time there? Again sorry if this is a really ignorant question, but im honestly curious…

@kgos16 Thanks a lot for the advice. I will be sure to do that if I do end up just taking my remaining units.

@dodgersmom Thank you so much! I’ll try my best

@BrownParent‌ Thanks for your help, What do you mean by only getting funds for commute from home for CSU though?

Check one of the UC websites, @asn0205 - you may be required to spend four full semesters there in order to graduate. Don’t know for sure though, so check one of the websites.

@asn0205, the maximum units you can transfer from a community college to a CSU or UC is 70.

Check assist.org to see if there are any classes that you should take for your major for the particular UC’s/CSU’s you plan to apply to.

For the CSU system you usually only get cal grant to cover tuition and your pell grant will cover books, transportation and personal expenses, sometimes there are state university grants but they don’t usually cover your room and board. You will have enough to commute from home if you live close enough to one. If you need to live there, you can take your student loan, but you and your parents will have to come up with the rest.

But UCs you also get the cal grant, in a larger amount to cover the larger tutiiton, and your Pell and you will have to take your student loan, do some work study and have some summer earnings but the UC will give you university grants to make up the rest.

If you haven’t, you should discuss your transfer plans with the transfer office although it is a bit on the very late side.

Just to clarify, for CSU you can get Cal Grant 5,470 + Pell 5,700 + loan 7,500= 18,670 vs COA of 22,000.

If you work summers and make 3 k and somehow find a job for 2k during school you can live away, looking for cheaper room rental in the area. But if you commute from home you can graduate without loans.

For UC you can get call grant 12,000 + Pell 5,700 + loan 5,000 to 7,000 plus you will be expected to earn 3-5k and the uni will make up the rest to COA 33,000

Please do visit the transfer office asap to figure out what is the best plan for remaining classes to take.
