I’d just submitted my app for Georgetown, so I’m just trying to get some opinions. I’m planning to major in sociology.
Demographics: Biracial (Asian/white-Hispanic) male from a large public school in Mass.
GPA: 3.47 UW (screwed up soph year), 4.04 W
ACT: 33
SAT II: 790 (Spanish w/ Listening), 770 (Math II), 690 (World History)
APs: 3 in junior year (Physics, Spanish, Calc AB), 5 in senior (Physics, Spanish, Calc BC, US Gov, English Lit)
AP scores: 3 (Physics lol), 4 (Calc AB)
Volunteering:
Habitat for Humanity (100+ hours. I mostly plan and construct houses. Volunteered in El Salvador in last summer)
The Borgen Project (I’m an advocate so I basically go around New England and speak about fighting world poverty)
Coaching youth lacrosse
Portaging at a boat racing event along the Charles River
Charity in SE Asia during my freshman year
I also volunteer at the local library and national historical park (not going to name the city)
Extracurriculars:
Club lacrosse (Have been with the club ever since I was 10. Have won a few awards)
Skiing, snowboarding, mountain climbing (highest I’ve climbed was 10,000+ feet)
Teaching myself French
Model UN
Mock Trial
Work:
Starbucks
Mercedes-Benz
Awards: some lacrosse accolades, John and Abigail Adams Scholarship
Essays: wrote about the habitat, climbing the mountain, and why I want to major in sociology
Rec Letters: haven’t read them, but my English teacher adored me so it should be good
I guess my only hooks would be that I’m a minority and first-generation. Also no one from my school has ever applied to Georgetown, so I’m not sure if that would give me an advantage since they wouldn’t be able to compare me that well? I’m pretty nervous about the process since my GPA is definitely on the lower end.
