Low math score with high verbal scores: is it acceptable?

My SAT I CR and writing scores are good (800 and 750 respectively, with a 12 for my essay) but my math score is substantially lower (610). I am interested in attending a fairly small high-quality liberal arts college with an excellent music program (ex: Oberlin, Lawrence, Bard, Northwestern) where I want to study English/creative writing and music performance. I have never loved math and am not interested in being a math or science major. Do I have a good chance of getting into such schools, despite my math score, and will my higher verbal scores redeem me?

610 is not a bad math score at all. Since it sounds like you know exactly which schools you are interested in just go to those schools’ web sites and find their admission information. You can probably find the SAT scores that they’re looking for very easily. If not, just call up their admission’s office and ask them directly. It should not be hard to find the average math SAT score of students that they’ve been accepting.

The lower math score will not be a problem at Bard. They’re used to high CR and writing scores and low math scores from those applicants who choose to submit standardized test scores, which are not required. Are you planning to apply to the conservatory for a double degree? I like your choice of schools.
