Low opinion

My son has been offered a Chancellors Scholarship to UMass Boston. That scholarship plus the Abigail Adams Scholarship will mean they will pay him to attend. I find the invite to very intriguing. My son says the school is for kids that can't get in anywhere else. His SAT scores were 2170 which is much higher than the average UMass Boston student's score. He does plan on going to medical school. He says he needs better preparation than he can get from UMass Boston. Is he right? Am I just excited by the prospect of not having to pay tuition?

It is true that UMass Boston is not considered to be a very good school- average at best. However, if he is looking to become a doctor, where he goes for undergrad doesn’t matter much, only the medical school does(although some would argue that it would be easier to get into a good medical school coming from a prestigious undergraduate university). My advice Is, if money is a big issue then go with UMass Boston- he will be able to keep a good gpa which is necessary for medical school, however he may not be afforded all of the opportunities(such as internships, shadowing, one on one time with professors, etc) that he could get at a better school. If your family has enough money to send him to a school that would better suit his needs and desires, then by all means let him go there, but don’t lead yourself into financial ruin.
