Low Rise 7

So I got Low Rise 7 for my dorm. It's a double suite. I googled it and apparently its one of the worst dorms in Cornell. Does anyone know anything about these dorms and why theyre so bad? Or Maybe they're not that bad?

Hey there,

I just graduated from Cornell in May and during my junior year, I was an RA in Low Rose 7 (LR 7). A lot of people may not like LR 7 because its not one of the newer dorms like Mews, or Court-Kay-Baurer. However, the rooms are a little bigger in my opinion than the newer dorms, so it’s a give and take. Also, there is a sense of community in dorms like LR7. A lot of residents have tight bonds with their suitmates and with the people in their unit. LR 7 has 4 Units and each unit has 6 suites. Each suite has 1 triple, 2 singles and 1 double.

Your experience is what you make of it. If you are open and interactive you will LOVE LR7!! However, if you are bitter that you aren’t in a newer dorm and your attitude portrays that, than you probably won’t like it as much. I loved LR 7 and most of my residents loved their experience. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

I lived in LR7 last year and loved it! The rooms are bigger than those in the newer dorms and the set up of the building allows everyone to become really close. The pros and cons are:

Pros:
-larger doubles and singles than other dorms
-communal suites and units
-fairly close to RPCC
-doors don’t automatically close like newer dorms

Cons:
-triples are just converted doubles so they feel small and lack privacy
-no air conditioning
-farther away from central than other dorms
-some aspects of the building felt like they were falling apart

I was in LR6, the building right beside LR7.

Another pro would be the bus stops. you walk to the end of the road and it’s right there. plus, it’s basically the first stop on that route (81) and you wont have trouble getting on especially if you have a 8am class! Many a times students waiting as Risley station can’t fit on the bus and are late to class. The newer dorms Mews/Court/Kay/Bauer are in the middle of North campus so they all go to Risley station (the LR stations are uphill for them).

The same bus (81) stops right in front of LR6/7 so if you’re a lazy person or who hates walking uphill, it’s very convenient! sort of makes up for the fact that they’re the farthest from central besides the town houses.

The community feeling I see the others talking about is very true and it’s basically because the doors don’t close themselves. If you leave your door open during the first few days/weeks, it’s basically impossible not to meet interesting people and form close friendships. I still hang around ALOT with my LR6/7 buddies because of this. That being said, walk around the LR and talk to people! It’s much better commnity feeling than Mews/Court/Kay/Bauer because their doors are heavy and shut automatically, giving you the sense that everyone is private and reserved.

The way the “units” are set up, you definitely feel like a close community as opposed to the “room-in-a-hallway” style of the other dorms.

I found laundry to be a bit annoying though if you have a huge pile-up. there are no elevators to get down there…
