Low SAT but High GPA..how far do people like me go?

So I have a 1930 SAT (1250 M+CR) but my unweighted GPA is a 4.21, which is over 4 because I have had A+s. I will have taken 8 APs by the end of this year and I received A+s in AP Chem, AP Calc. Therefore, I am doing better with GPA than I did with SAT
(BTW my weighted GPA is a 4.91)

I am wondering if you know people like me...How far do we go? I really want to get into UVA but I was unsure about my 1250 on SAT...do they look at the fact that I have been getting good grades throughout my school and that I have taken 3 APs and I have gotten a 5 on AP Calc BC, and AP Chemistry..and a 4 on AP US History..

Two words…holistic approach.

Hi,

U-Va cares more about grades than SATs. One of my kids (a Virginia resident) got into U-Va off the wait list last year with a 1260 M+CR on the SAT but strong grades and classes (not as strong as yours though). So you are definitely in the running.

I’m seeing, though, that you also applied to VCU’s pre-med guaranteed admit program. I have to tell you, if you can swallow your pride and get over the whole prestige thing you’re better off in the long run going that route if you can. U-Va is a tough school for pre-med, and you are likely to encounter some seriously stiff competition. Odds are that if you’re on the low end of the high school applicant pool to U-va you’re going to have a lot of trouble rising to the top end of the med school applicant pool at U-Va four years from now. VCU is the much safer bet – and you’ll have a fun four years there.

but really…how many such people get into uva every year (if you know it and if this is an acceptable question)

You can see the statistics on SAT scores for admits here. Other than that I’m not sure exactly how anyone on a public forum would know how many kids who have your particular stats are admitted.

To top robertr:

One word… ESSAYS!!!

:) and thanks for your help thus far robert.

UVA cares much more about grades and class selection over test scores - and yours won’t keep you out. You sound competitive! Go for it! :)

haha thanks guys…this at least pushes me to work towards my essays

Since when 1930 is a low score?

nah dude there are freaks in my school with 2200s and they get rejected from uva…this is what worries me the most…see i have good gpa, good sat2s and good AP Scores…lots of volunteering and lots of research…but a lot of people who have amazing sat scores don’t have these things…i wanted to know how far each of us goes and which one would the college rather prefer

This is funny. I fall into the same category. I am the valedictorian of my class, yet I can’t seem to break 2000 (measly 1940 or 28 on ACT). Salutatorian can’t break 2000 either. Neither can third place. From what I hear, GPA and SAT seem to vary inversely. The higher the GPA, the lower the SAT, and vice versa. I guess that’s why schools seem to look at students holistically.

The most important factor now, I assume, are the essays, which have to blow admissions out of the water. My Commonapp main essay is outstanding, but I’m having trouble with the supplement essay :(

clocksays9-Listen to Novaparent. If you in fact have applied or have an interest in the VCU pre-med program and get in-go. I am very familiar with this program and you should strongly consider all it has to offer. There are other programs like the VCU one out there, in case you are in the northeast corridor you may want to look into the collaboration between Albany Medical College with programs at Siena, RPI and Union. Not sure where you are from, it may behoove you to research these options.

Are you IS or OOS?

This one boils down to whether you are IS or OOS

I was accepted IS with these stats, as you can see nothing special on test scores

Rank: 2/480 (nabbed 1 at the end =p )
ACT: 31
SAT: 1990 (Math:740 CR:640 Writing:610) (yikes!)
SAT 2s: Math 1 680 U.S. History 790
3 years of XC
3 years of Marching Band
3 years as Academic team President
Guidance Office Assistant
job reffing soccer
100+ hours spent volunteering in HS
Member of NHS, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, etc, etc.
Recipient of numerous school and county awards
10 APs in total, AP Scholar with Distinction (eventually picked up National)
Great recs and essays imo

ALTHOUGH all hope is not lost is not lost if you OOS. I was accepted OOS UNC with these stats. UNC OOS is often considered a “tougher” admit than UVA OOS so grades, imo, can trump test scores at the right schools. Low test scores will bar you from the upper privates and Ivies though unless you have a hook.

Yes but the vcu gmed program is equally competitive if not more because I know a lot of my friends getting rejected from gmed and getting into UVA and 100percentwahoo you have really good ACT score so that would have helped…anyway I am really keeping my fingers crossed for UVA…go UVA!!
