I know my SAT score is crappy, but do you all think that my ECs and gpa could keep me in the running for admission?

I posted this in another recent post, but there was a quote from guttentag that said they often defer borderline applicants with a significant gap in their application. I don’t know what constitutes a gap, but it seems to me you are a borderline applicant that could go either way. Your GPA is good, but probably won’t compensate for test scores. Your ECs are very good and it looks like you had some good material for a good essay that may tip you into being accepted. Honestly, I have no clue what they are looking for and everything is going to be speculation until descions come out. Good luck!

Your test scores are definitely on the lower end. I have a 35 ACT (which is about a 2340 SAT) and I’m dubious if I can get in or not Reg Decision. If you wrote a stellar essays and had great rec letters, you should have a solid chance. Did anyone else besides me apply for the Robertson scholarship?

Your scores are not low, they are at the middle range. Don’t listen to these people who are trying to psyche you out. Not everyone who goes to duke has a 2300+.

There are lots of posters on this board who have listed excellent credentials that makes them well qualified to attend Duke. There will be approximately 2250 applicants for 625 positions in Trinity and 400 applicants for 125 positions in Pratt for ED. Add to that the subgroup goals it is not about being qualified, as with all highly selective schools it is about picking one excellent applicant over another. None of us know for sure what chance we have.

College Confidential tends to be a disgusting place. A 1400 is good, people on this site like to think that if it isnt a 2400 you have no shot. SAT scores are overrated anyway, and I’m not saying this to defend myself. You’re app looks great and a 1400 is nothing to be ashamed about, in fact, its an excellent score.

Last year my son had a 1400 (2130), curriculum rigor (calc b/c as a junior, mvc as senior, plus Physics C and lots of other APs), top 5% of class but not close to sal/val, and few ECs until senior year. He applied RD from NOVA (like NY, there are tons of Duke applicants here) and got wait listed. So, regardless of what people say with 2300s, you definitely have a decent shot ED at Duke with your stats.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I guess theres not much I can do now but sit back and wait to see what happens.

I’m honestly expecting a rejection, but a defferal would be really nice at this point.

something I didn’t mention: I did an independent study on International Political Economy, where I created the curriculum and had our district director of curriculum approve it as a for credit class. Do you think that would be seen positively, or would admissions counselors only view it as a BS class?
