Williams requires 2 SAT Subject tests, so I took Lit and Math II. Lit was okay (710), but I got a 630 on Math 2. I can do math and everything (I'm doing well in AP Calc), but I have this tendency to panic and make dumb mistakes on tests. My SAT I Math was a 700 and my CR 800. I'm hoping these scores are high enough to make up for the Math 2, but is a 630 just too low?

Is there time to try again? You should try again if there’s time. A 630 is below the 50th percentile, I think. Everyone has bad days, but a score at that level is worth trying to improve.

Can you take another SAT II? My S panics with math even though he knows the material.

From the Williams website:

“We recommend that you take the required tests in the spring of your junior year and repeat them in the fall of senior year—ideally no later than the December test date.”

I think you should be planning to take a couple of SAT II tests in December. I would frankly be leery of submitting any Subject Test which you scored less than 700 in. Don’t feel compelled to submit a math exam score. If you were to take Chemistry, for example, in December and scored a 740 on it I’d send that score in rather than a 670 Math II score. A 740 Math II score, on the other hand? I’d send it.

The thing is, my counselor gave me fee waivers for the tests. I can’t retake them without getting more, but I would feel kinda bad using more, since she only has a certain amount…
Would it be a major deciding factor?

I don’t think it will be a major deciding factor. All you other scores sound really high so I would just relax, submit and hope for the best. Good luck!!!

I don’t agree. Get the waiver and take something you can get a 700 in. Unless you are a URM and your math grades are fine. Then it prolly won’t matter.

Eek! I’m East Asian (Viet, to be specific), and I think I’m an ORM? CC was the first time I ever heard about “over/under-represented minority” lol…
I’ve had A’s in math up to junior year, and I currently have a high B in AP Calculus right now. I think I’ll be able to pull it up to an A for the semester, since I’ve been doing better on tests this quarter I’m also currently taking 5 year-long AP classes and 2 semester AP classes, so I do have a rigorous schedule on top of taking a high-level math class. Does that make a difference?
Sigh. Boo standardized testing. I can take other subject tests, but they won’t be a part of my Williams application, since it’s too late now.

Don’t worry, you won’t get in cause of your SAT II’s and you definitely won’t get rejected because of them. Although your math is kinda low, it won’t make or break their decision.

Just cross your fingers and hope for a little bit of luck in this college process! I think we all need it :)

I disagree. Test scores are a major factor in the Williams decision-making process, unless you have a “hook” or special asset like sports or musical performance

Um, does first generation, low-income count as a decent hook? I’m getting a little desperate here lol…but thanks for the support, everyone, and thank you OldbatesieDoc for being straightforward
Why is college admissions so stressful and insane and sldfjlsiejrislpaierpieajfcl;od?!

I agree with OldbatesieDoc.

Arydesia, All of this is speculative at this point, but in my opinion your Math SATII score will neither get you in nor keep you out of Williams. Your grades and other scores can compensate, helped along by the subjective parts of your application like essays, recommendations, extracurriculars and personal profile.

Also, in my opinion of course :), your Vietnamese heritage does give you URM status at Williams and being a high achieving first generation college goer from a low income multi-cultural family will be a plus.

Concentrate on putting together a knockout application and put your math SATII out of mind.
Good luck and let us know how you do.

We did not find that test scores were a deciding factor. For example, S was admitted with under 700 on math SAT I (690) and under 700 on Bio SAT II (680) with no major hook. He other test scores were considerably higher, but those scores were still there. He even got a 2 on the Latin AP as a junior, and we did send it.

He was still accepted.

His SAT’s still met the statistical average and other SAT II was 780. He also got a 34 on the ACT, but those lower scores didn’t seem to be a deal breaker. Other schools seemed more numbers focused.

momrath – I’m taking your advice and forgetting about my SAT IIs completely After months of worrying, I may as well relax while I’m waiting. I do hope I benefit from the heritage factor, as you mentioned…
mythmom – It’s awesome that your son was accepted! He must be having fun at Williams :)

Thanks, everyone!!

Arydesia, I can’t tell from your posts whether you’ve already sent in your application or if you will do so in December. From looking at your history on CC, I’d say that your weakness would be perceived as not enough passion in your extracurriculars. You need to oomph up your presentation. I don’t mean to lie, but to explain what you like to do when you’re not in class. Williams cares about this.

I think the 34 on the ACT had a strong mitigating influence…1st generation is awesome, tho, and low-income also. Williams is looking for financial diversity, and ethnic diversity, so I think you have a decent shot. I didn’t realize you had that going for you when I first gave advise.

I didn’t submit the ACT…do you mean that my SAT I (1500) is equivalent to that? but yay for the decent shot (:
I’ll find out in less than 24hrs if I got a Questbridge scholarship – if not, Williams will let me apply ED even though the deadline is over, so I get a second try (and a third if I’m deferred to RD, I suppose). I would be sooo happy if I did get Matched through Questbridge, but the chance of that is less than the admissions rates of even the most selective schools *sigh
I didn’t mention my extracurriculars mainly because I’m avoiding being too detailed about my more personal stats. I’m kinda paranoid about giving info over the internet. But I can do a quick summary. I’ve been in two clubs for 4yrs, both heavily involved in service projects (I basically ran a blood drive this past Oct.), NHS for 2yrs with tutoring, a job for 2yrs (about 10hrs/week), my youth group for 12yrs + youth choir for 2yrs, and Teen Court since this summer. I wish I’d found out about Teen Court earlier, though, since it’s definitely the most interesting to me now! I know I don’t have as many extracurriculars as others–I really wonder how people manage a dozen or so considering the number of hours/week available!–but I tried to show my dedication to the ones I’m a part of (:

Thank you everyone for your advice – got the Questbridge Scholarship!! Williams 2015!!

Congrats Arydesia!
