Hey everyone. As you know from my title, I have a very low sat score(930) but I have an ok gpa(3.3). I was a bad student until junior year when I started to raise my grades. This year, I have been doing excellent. I have gone from below a 2.0 gpa to a 3.3 in less than a year at a private school and I am currently attending dual credit classes at a local community college(3 in total) and I have gotten excellent recs. from the profs at the college. I have managed to get my status up to top 10 percent of my graduating class. I'm just wondering, do I have any chance at University of Michigan? This is my dream school and im dying to find out....Thanks.

oh yeah...I left out that I have a little over 100 hours of community service(I know it's not much) and I had a lot of fun flying airplanes as a hobby. Any insight would be great. Thanks.

Well, as I'm sure you know, a 3.3 low GPA for Michigan - and your SAT is below the 25 percentile. What is your GPA for just your junior year? (What school do you go to that you can be top 10% with a 3.3? If it's a very competitive school, they will obviously take this into account.) Michigan is a fantastic, and I wouldn't discourage you from applying, but you may also want to look at another Big 10 school. If you're in-state, Michigan State, of course. Otherwise, check out Indiana. It's a beautiful campus and many students are happy there. Much easier to get in. Also, I'd recommend that you study your brains out for the SAT. Take a prep class if you can. Spend a couple of hours everyday this summer studying. It's absolutely possible to raise your score by 200 points if you work at it. You've already shown you can turn your grades around - so you can do it!

Also, try to learn the SAT test itself as much as you can, you now the tricks and tips here and there, it can really boost ur score.

Iwantit, you really need to improve your SAT. Anything bellow 1200 will usually result in a rejection. Your GPA is fine. A 3.3 unweighed GPA from a private school will at least get your foot in the door and if Michigan sees and upward trend, you will be in decent shape. But an SAT score under 1200 (or 1800 in the new SAT) will result in a rejection.

nooo, i gotta 1180 SAT, 27 ACT and got accepted to michigan OUT OF STATE too. My gpa was a 3.65 unweighted (3.9 w), but i did a lot of activities and i took a lot of AP/hon classes (6-7 of each) and i am from a good private school. my friend gotta 1140 sat, 25 act, 3.5 uw and got accepted too but maybe this is cause we're from well reputed schools that the admissions officers know very well of.

UMadar, the acceptance rate for studentsa with under a 1200 is very low. Most of them are URMs or athletes. And as you pointed out, you had a 3.7 GPA, which is quite different from a 3.3 GPA.

ok sorry, lol, didnt realize the 3.7 3.3 part. Im not an athlete or u of m resident by the way. quite frankly i dont really know how i got in, lol

UMadar, it is not unusual for students with sub 1200 with 3.7 GPAs to get into Michigan, but I would say the acceptance rate for such students hovers arount 20%-25%. But for every student like your who gets in, 4 get rejected. As for your friend, I find it hard to believe. I have never heard of a 3.5 student with a 25 on the ACT getting into Michigan. Unless your friend's parents gave millions of $$$ to the university or unless your friend is an URM.

I'm not so sure about that Alexandre...my friend, white male w/ a 24 from LA who applied 12/1 got in last month

It happens. They are called statistical outlyers. If he is a 3.7+ student with a bunch of 5s and 4s on AP exams and simply doesn't test well. But it is very unusual. Generally, Michigan's adcom does not consider students with less than a 25 on the ACT. Even URMs.

Wow 4 rejected for every person like me who gets in. Thats an accomplishment I'd say. But that makes me ponder the fact if I really am fit for michigan then cause it seems I BARELY/luckily got in or something.

umadarr, if Michigan accepted you, it means they know you can do it. I would not worry about it. Obviously, Michigan has accepted students from your school with similar stats and they did just fine at Michigan. Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the family. I hope you join us.

"nooo, i gotta 1180 SAT, 27 ACT and got accepted to michigan OUT OF STATE too. My gpa was a 3.65 unweighted (3.9 w), "

Yes...a lot of people with less than 1200 get in....michigan is based on GPA more than anything else. Also, with a 55% acceptance rate, the OP stands a good chance of admission.

what's OP stand for? and yea I'm DEFINITELY goin to michigan. it was my #1 choice since the first day i saw its campus in like 6th grade, lol

UMARDARR, you will be fine. Like I said, if Michigan accepted you, it is because it knows you can handle the work load. Congratulations and welcome to the family!
