Low SAT score: Georgetown University

Hi Everyone!

So I submitted my Early Action Application to Georgetown; that being said and done with, the only thing I am worried about is are my low standardized test scores… I received a 1210 the first time I took it, studied a bit and took it a second time but only increased 20 points. After this, I kinda gave up, lost all hope and experienced learned helplessness. I took the ACT that wasn’t any good either. Scored a 25 my first time took it again and received the same score. At this point, I wasn’t sure what to do anymore. I visited Georgetown in October & fell in love but my scores were essentially holding me back so I said there’s no point in applying. My counselor, on the other hand, said it won’t hurt in any way to at least tried. So I applied for these scores. I decided to retake the SAT one more time and got my scores back today and I got a 1320. I sent that in right away, anything to boost my chance. I know it’s not an ideal score for Georgetown but it’s better than my prior scores. Anyway, my point is what are my chances, if any? Slim to none? I believe my essays, EC’s and recs are very good. I had my Georgetown Alumni Interview already and my interviewer told me it was one of the best interviews he has had in the 23 years he’s been doing it.

My EC’s are:

Human Rights Group- Voice for the Nameless. I have been a student leader for 3 years now. We have worked closely with Amnesty International and received an award from them for Midwest Student Group of the Year.

Newspaper Editor Features for 2 years

Piano- 10 years

Church Choir- 10 years

Polish Folk & Dance Company- 12 years

Pi Sigma Pi, NHS, Science & Spanish National Honor Society

I have had two internships; one at the Field Museum in Chicago with a professor from a University for their Archaeology program. We basically did inventories of Native American bones and skulls and articulated everything together. We put teeth back in mandibles which is cool.

I am currently interning with the Illinois State Police Department; I was interested at one point in criminal justice but changed what I want to pursue but this internship was such a cool experience. I went out on ride alongs in the worst parts of Chicago, trained with a K9 unit and the Navy, visited a Crime Lab, worked with CSI, it’s great.

My personal essay was about me having to grow up as a cultural mediator and translator for my parents who do not speak English and how hard it was for me but also how beneficial it was growing up bilingual. It’s very personal and I think it’s pretty well written.

My SFS essay was about the Syrian Refugee Crisis; I put a unique spin on it in which I actually talked a little about how I presented to my city council a refugee resolution from Amnesty advocating for a welcoming community. This connected to my solution for my SFS essay regarding my topic.

Ultimately, I am interested in international relations, in hopes of becoming a Foreign Service Officer with a concentration in human rights, foreign affairs or global security. SFS & Georgetown just seem like the perfect match for me. The only thing that is keeping my back I believe are my scores.

Thanks for all your help:)

Also, I forgot to mention that I graduated from Polish School that I attended for 11 years with honors to certify that I am bilingual and can speak, write, read in and understand the language

did you take your subject tests?

I have not, I plan to if I get deferred. In all honesty I didn’t even know that was a thing until I started looking into Georgetown these past two months. My school had never emphasized the importance of those tests… which would have been helpful if they did. I guess it would also be helpful to post to give everyone a better idea that I have a 3.8 unweighted and 4.2 weighted GPA. On my AP tests I received a 5 on Psychology, 4 English Lang, & 3 US history. And will be taking Biology, US gov, comparative gov, English lit, and Spanish this May.

I’m a high school student, and I know this isn’t what you want to here, but really no one knows your chances, people get accepted with 22s occasionally. Don’t be down if you’re not accepted, Georgetown is extremely difficult to get into.

Very true and I agree. I just want to see what some people think based on maybe prior acceptances. I’ve accepted the fact that if I’m not accepted, it’s not the end of the world, but it sure would be nice.

GT generally wants SAT IIs and their ACTs are listed at 30-33. I would say high reach.

DUDE, YOU’RE IN!!! CONGRATS!!!

Thank you so much! I honestly was not expecting this, it feels so surreal.
