Low SAT

Hey everyone,
I got a 1800 ( 700 Math, 540 Cr, 560 W). It seems like a low score to me and my dad. My dad tells me i won't get into any college. My high school grades are nothing amazing. In the 10th i got 86% and 11th grade i got 62% :(
So too make up for it during my 11th to 12th grade summer i did an internship at telecom company. My project was pretty good and hoepfully it will look impressive.
The colleges i'm looking at are:
ASU
Penn State
University of Texas
University of Colorado
Louisiana State
and a few others...
The thing is i'm from India so i'm out of state for everything so a major concern is finance and convincing my dad to let me goto college there.
But luckily i was born in the USA so i'm a US citizen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How does 62% compare to your peers’ GPAs?

I’m sure that you can get into ASU because the acceptance rate there is something like 95%. Also, a 1800 SAT is probably in the top 20% of admitted students at ASU. Kids from my school have gotten into ASU with 2.4W’s and 1500s.

With your GPA, I wouldn’t waste the money applying to Penn State or Texas (Colorado might also be too far out of your range). I also think that LSU would be a reach based on your GPA. My advice, retake the SAT and try to improve your score as much as possible.

@silverturtle- My class average was around 75-80% with a guy getting 90% as the highest.

@SOC2015- Are you sure Texas and Penn are way out of reach?

Here’s a list of schools i thought i’d apply to:

Texas
U of Washington
U of Illinois
Penn State
Indiana U
Ohio State
Louisiana State
Michigan State
U of Colorado
Texas tech
U of Arizona
ASU
U of Oregon
If you have any suggestions.
Thanks.

I’m not sure how to convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale so if you could do that, it would help me out. Since you seem to like big state flagship schools, I’m going to suggest Ole Miss (Oxford, Mississippi), Alabama (Tuscaloosa), Auburn (Auburn, Alabama), Kentucky (Lexington,) Arkansas (Fayettville), and Tennessee (Knoxville). Most of these schools should be good matches especially if your W GPA ends up being 3.0-3.5.

I think you’ll be fine at ASU.

What are your ECs? My brother got into Boulder with an 1870 and a 3.2 weighted GPA, but he was an Eagle Scout.

My GPA is about 3.75 for my HS. I used some online converter. Not sure if it’s right. Maybe now you could tell me how i’d do.

Also, for EC’s i’ve taken part in the Rubik’s Speed Solve Challenge and i came 3rd.
I’ve participated in the World Environment Forum.
I have played basketball for my school team since the 9th grade (actually 6th).
Also, i play the drums. I have also taken part in a couple of inter-school quizzes and a few other events

Anyone got any ideas?

3.75 weighted?

I think you have a GREAT shot at Colorado. Their acceptance rate is like 78%.

OP, you have also posted your question in another forum. You may get admission with these scores, you may not get FA and that seems to be your biggest challenge. You may want to have a back up plan.

The problem is the student has no means to pay for these OOS schools. His dad has refused to provide financial info and also, these OOS publics don’t give their FA to non-residents anyway. So, he’d get admitted to some of these schools and then be handed a big bill (over $28k per year) to pay.

His only chance is to raise his scores (take both the ACT and SAT) and make sure that your GPA is at least a 3.5 (which it may not be).

Hey, I am an Indian and I got to the Kelley School in IU. I can help with stuffs. What are you going to major in? That is a really important thing, you used choose colleges accoirding to your major.

You and your dad are being dumbasses.

An 1800 SAT score is nothing to be disappointed about, considering the average score is in the 1500’s range.

And with a 3.75 UW GPA you can make it into a top 50 university.

@dibbasatya- I’m majoring in CS.

Yes, i’m taking the SAT again on June 5th. Hopefull my score will improve.

@Precognition- Are you sure 1800 would be sufficient for the colleges i wish to attend?

@thesushi

It would be sufficient for most of them if you were a resident of their respective states.

Don’t apply to state schools unless you’re from those states, it’ll make admission that much more difficult.

But yes, it’s sufficient for most of them.

Penn will not accept that grade. It’s an Ivy League. Try to study harder because most universities will look at your GPA. Your SAT is ok mine is below 1000 :(

But i’m out of state for everything. I’m an international student with US citizen.

@10152229- I mean Penn State not University of Pennsylvania

You’re an international student?

Doesn’t really matter if you lived in a US state at the time of applying to college.

Do they know, that many schools in India intentionally deflate grades in 11th standard to prepare kids for 12th? Also, which syllabus are you studying in India? An 86% in ICSE is a lot better than 86% in the government system.
