Low SAT

I’m in CBSE. Which is much harder than government.

I’m a US citizen studying in India. So i don’t think i come under international

Also, the GPA i put up of 3.75 was out of 4. How is that a bad GPA and how much do ou say i need for my colleges?

Also, i forgot to add that i held the secretary position in the Interact club. It’s a subsidary of Rotary. That should be a major boost i think?

OK cool, I think an 86% in CBSE can be explained away and you need to tell colleges that some schools make 11th much harder to prepare for 12th (if this is true).

The student is NOT an international student if she’s a US citizen. She’s a US citizen who would be considered a non-resident/OOS for publics and just a US citizen for privates. She will be in the US pool of applicants. Don’t use the word, “International”. That is for noncitizens and students without green cards.

However, a public like Penn State, UT, UColorado, will NOT help pay for your costs - regardless.

Sushi needs to compile a reasonable list that includes schools that will give big merit. However, first a reasonable assessment is needed of the real GPA. I don’t know how you get a 3.75 with those percentages. You may have made a mistake. Your GPA may be a lot lower on a 4.0 scale.

A 3.75 GPA is equivalent to a 92% average for your high school year. According to you, your average for all high school years is lower.

(90-92%) = 3.7 out of 4.0
(87-89%) = 3.3 out of 4.0
(83-86%) = 3.0
(80-82%) = 2.7
(77-79%) = 2.3

And, ACT and SAT scores need to improve (take BOTH)!!!

There’s no way this student can come to the US without big merit since the dad won’t pay and won’t provide FA info.

Sushi… your ECs are not going to matter much. The problem isn’t getting accepted to a US school, the problem is getting it paid for. That will be based on your stats.

I think that OP (thesushi) does not like the message that is being given to him and is trying to ask the question in different ways in different forums hoping for a better answer.

As mom2collegekids has been emphasizing

Exactly, there are schools (not the top tier ones) that will give the OP admission with current stats. None of them will give him/her much aid, let alone full aid. OP has options that he/she can do to improve the situation

1) Retake the SAT/ACT and get great scores. Similarly ensure that the GPA is high relatively. I am going to assume that college admissions officers, especially in some of the popular colleges, get a lot of applicants from India and would know what is a good score and what is not. My sense is that the OP’s score will not put him/her in the top bracket of Indian students applying to US universities. (I may be wrong about this). The fact that he is a US citizen does not matter, ad coms look at the context of the application. They would compare him/her to other students from India who apply.

2) Persuade his father to help with FAFSA and get some aid that way. (The above two points are not mutually exclusive).

3) Pursue an undergraduate in India and come to the US for graduate studies, where aid chances may be higher.

4) …

@thesushi
You are actually getting very good advice on this forum.

Hey Sushi: Now that I see you’re UW GPA is 3.75, I take back what I said about you not having a good shot at Texas or Penn State. Texas still might be a little tough (just because it’s tough for everyone OOS) but you should have a good shot at PSU.

If you want to attend a large public school and want tuition assistance, check out Boise State, Oklahoma State, and LSU. You already qualify for an OOS tuition waiver at Boise and a partial one at OSU. Just try to raise that SAT score a to a 1330/1600 and you should get full tuition at all 3.

^^^

I’m not certain that Sushi’s GPA is a 3.75. Based on what he/she says her averages are, I think the GPA is a LOT lower. But, either way, Penn St and UT will not be affordable.

Okay, guys i’m not sure about the GPA i’ll let the colleges do that. But good news is my dad has agreed to let me fill FAFSA and said he would try to support me. (I even showed him this thread and had a 3 hour long talk about how much i wanted to goto the US, hopefully he won’t change his mind :)

So you think i can get a full ride at UO ( not OSU). And do you think i can get into Penn and UT?

And yes, i will tell the colleges that my school did make it intentionally hard in 11th so we would work harder in 12th. Unfortunately my school does that.

Also, someone mentioned i said that i wasn’t getting enough help. I never said that :P. I’m getting the most help i have ever got from here. #1 place for college research and everything else college related.

Thank you guys :D

Telling colleges that your school makes it hard for 11th grade might help with admissions, but your problem is FINANCIAL…that story won’t make the school affordable.

Okay, i think that GPA of mine was a mistake. I think it’s actually around 2.2 (3.6 for 10th grade and 0.8 for 11th) :(

Also, i kind of got my financial thing figured out so i would like to know about the admissions. I showed my dad my thread on parents not paying and i showed him some articles online. Then i sat down and talked to him about how badly i want to goto college in the US. So at the moment he has agreed to help me (just hoping he won’t change his mind).

So if you could just take a look at my list and with the updates stats tell me what my chances are?

With that GPA, your choices are going to be very limited. Most of the better schools require a minimum 3.0 for admittance.

700 Math, 540 Cr, 560 W

However, your M+CR SAT isn’t bad (1240), but it’s not high enough for top schools that give the best aid - especially since your GPA is a 2.2.

You say that your dad is going to cooperate. Does that mean that he’s now agreed to fully pay for all college costs? If not, then you still have a big financial problem. You’re not in-state for any schools. So, the costs will all be high, and your stats won’t qualify for any merit scholarships. The problem is that the schools that give aid are the better schools that you won’t likely get admitted to.

So, find out how much your dad will pay each year and then we can make some recommendations.

Just be aware with that GPA, your choices will be limited, but there are schools that will accept you. But, unlikely would you get any or much aid.

Okay, so my GPA may seem bad to you in US standards.
Have a look at it from a Indian point of view.

For indian schools the 12th grade is the most important year as we have the “Board” Exam. It’s the final exam conducted at the end of the year by the Central Board of Secondary Education. It’s what all Indian colleges use to determine admission. It is the ONLY criteria. I mean it’s all they look at, the score of that one exam, no GPA, no EC’s,etc.
Therefore in order to prepare us for this our school makes the 11th grade a living hell. Our course work is extraordinary. The corrections of test, projects, etc is extremely strict. Then we end the 11th grade a month early and start the 12th grade to prepare us for this board exam.

Also, in my school the percent ranges to grades are

A+ 85-100
A 80-84
B+ 70-79
B 60-69
and so on…

So in the US a B would be a 3.0 GPA if i’m not mistaken.

So what would all this mean?

Well, American schools are going to be processing your admissions before you do your senior exams, right? So, they won’t know how good or bad you’ll do. All they’ll have is your current grades. Right?

Even if you end up with a 3.0, you won’t get accepted to the schools that give the best aid. Do you see that is your main problem???

Now, when you talked to your dad, did he agree to pay for all of your college costs? If not, then that will be your problem.

In order to figure out your gpa, you need a chart like this:

A+ 85-100
A 80-84
B+ 70-79
B 60-69

If this is from your school, go through the final grade in each class, figure out what letter grade it is, convert to a 4.0 (A and A+= 4.0, A-+ 3.7, etc) and get a gpa. You need that to figure out what schools to target.

But again, does your dad have the $ to pay for a US school in cash? If not, how much can he give you?

Yes, i understand what you guys are saying. That i may get accepted but i ma to be able to finance it. But at the moment i’m trying to find out what colleges will accept me? So if you could help me there, the next step would be the financial part of it.

Probably any school ranked from about #75 on down will accept you if your GPA is not a 2.2, but is really about a 3.0.

So, do you want a big “rah rah” school or a small, quiet school?

If you saw my list i think most of them were major state schools. So yeah i would prefer a larger school preferably in an urban area :)

Also, if it helps i want to major in Computer Science
