Hi, I'm currently a Junior in high school. Last year i took the chemistry regents in NY and did very poorly (came close to failing) because I was feeling really sick. My grades in the actual chemistry honors class were in the average bracket, in the high eighties.

I'm among the top fifty in my class and have above a ninety five in almost every subject, with a weighted GPA around 4.1.

I'm not sure how heavily colleges look at regents scores in comparison to course grades, effort, extracurriculars, SAT, etc (my SAT score: superscore of 1900 to date)

I'm wondering as to whether I should retake the exam. It's been a year since I've opened a chemistry book and now its the end of junior year. My last opportunity to take the regents before college apps is in august. I have several other classes I need to prepare for in my senior year over the summer, many of which are APs, and I don;t know if I can find to time to restudy an entire year of chemistry for a month.

Would this severely affect my admittance into a college? Are my grades in the course enough to let me through? I'm consistently a "good student" in all other regards. I'm looking at NYU and Adelphi's nursing programs. Should I bother retaking it or should I specify my circumstance in a letter when doing apps?

Thanks

short answer is that no one considers regents scores very much except ny state and CUNY schools, where they are a factor. private schools in ny its not a big factor. even if a state or city school is one of your safety schools, I suspect that strong grades and test scores in a particular subject might override a low regents score in it. a strong showing in an AP science class and a good score on the AP test will defintely help, especially for nursing. good luck to you.

I believe the only schools that even consider Regents scores are CUNYs && SUNYs .

Don’t worry , your not the only one to do bad on a regents. I failed the global regents and passed it the second time … with a 67 -_- .

BUT … i passed … =]

Yeah,I got a 67 on the Chem regents too, and I figured that only SUNYs and CUNYs would care highly. All my other regents are pretty good, and this is the only other major dent in the report card.

thanks guys. =)

P.S: The irony…I got a 99 on the Global Regents ;D lol…but passing is passing.

You should be fine.
I suggest retaking it though. I went from a 72 to a 94 on the physics regents just by studying a tad bit.

If a college claims to be “holistic” then why wouldn’t they consider it? Sure there are times when a kid is sick, but 95% of the time an unexpected poor grade is a warning flag. IMHO, standardized tests have much greater weight with elite colleges than is publicized as almost all applicanths have a good GPA.

Ironically, I got out of my 1974 New York State regents Chemistry exam because the answer key was stolen and widely distributed.

That’s too funny. I was a junior in high school when all the Regents exams were canceled in 1974. I didn’t have to take a single exam that year, including Chemistry, thank the Lord O Jesus Christ. I might add that it did not have an adverse effect on my college admissions, as I was accepted to SUNY Buffalo, one of the best universities in the state of New York.
