low undergrad GPA, do MBA, then consulting?

hi. i just have a question about getting into consulting.

i have low undergrad GPA from ivy-league engineering (3.06), but im thinking about working for 3-5 years very hard, do some voluntary works along the way, and hopefully get into some good MBA eventually.

doing that, would it be possible to land a job in consulting if i graduate from good MBA program despite low undergrad GPA?

i know my first goal would be to get into a good MBA, but i wish to know if i suceed, do i have a shot at mgn consulting at good places?

Your gpa is irrelevant after you get mba.
3.06 is not really low.

^You couldn't be more wrong.

Your low GPA will be factored in when looking for jobs and applying to B school. Your low GPA will inhibit you from getting a good job. With a mediocre job and a really low GPA, your chances of getting into a good MBA program are very low. Everything is interconnected.

Judging by someone's posting history, it looks like they have a somewhat warped view of reality.

A 3.06 isn't a terrible GPA, but if you did well the classes within your major or have a great interview personality you should be able to land a good job. If you do well there, and get a good recommendation from your boss then you should be able to get into a fine school for your MBA.

Once you have your MBA I doubt people will care about what your GPA was at your undergrad institution. I don't think you'd include it on your resume after you've been out of college for 5+ years.

aworldaprt/ "Your low GPA will inhibit you from getting a good job. "

not really. i am engineer, not business major trying to get into IBs. I will be working for GE starting this fall. Before that, all of my 5 onsite interviews were w/ top 30 fortune companies.

I am open to all advices, but your above claim is completely wrong at least for engineers. (we've had 2.9 ppl getting into GM)

My mistake, xjis, I didn't know you were not going for IB or consulting gigs. I should have said that my post was directed towards people wanting to go directly into banking or consulting.

RR, I don't get your post.
