One of the essays I have to write for a college is "Briefly discuss how your family, school, neighborhood and background have impacted your educational goals and aspirations."

The question is easy enough, but the only problem is that the max word count is 250, which is amazingly low. Do you think it would be okay if I answered the question talking about my family and background only? Would leaving out my school and neighborhood be that bad?

Write it without the worry about the word count first. Then edit it later. What you want is a really good essay to start. That’s the bones. Then trim the fat later.

Well I would really be able to write a better essay if I didnt have to talk about my neighborhood or school. I want to discuss just my family background. Would that be okay?

I agree with limabeans advice - except when the max word count is 250. This is tough. The prompt says “and” instead of “or,” which is really weird. If I were you, I would consider it as an OR and just try to write how your past affected your future, essentially.

If they ask you to write about your family, school, and neighborhood, you should include something about all those, at least briefly. Who knows what would be “better” if you haven’t written it yet? Try it and then decide. It’s easier to take out.

thank you for your advice guys! i listened to limabean and was able to write something that involved all of them… and it actually flowed from point to point quite smoothly. I didnt realize that all four of those are very interconnected.
