Lower GPA, but High ACT!

Hi, you guys. I would like help compiling a list of colleges to apply to. I am a current second semester junior in high school and have an ACT composite of 32, but a weighted GPA of 3.5. I live in Arkansas, but I would like to attend out of state, and price is not a factor. I feel as if my 3.4 is justified, because freshman and sophomore year I was heavily bullied and was pushed to the limit of almost dropping out, so my college essay may expose light onto this issue. I have no problem with private universities, but I have lived in a very Church of Christ town all of my life, so I would not like to attend a Christian college. Please recommend some saftey, 50/50 schools, and reach schools from around the country. It would be greatly appreciated.

32 isn’t that high and 3.5 definitely isn’t low

What is your unweighted GPA and what are your parents willing/able to pay? If you haven’t done so already, do sit down and have the money talk with them. Figure out your expected family contribution to see if you will qualify for need-based aid. If you need to seek merit scholarships, you will need to target places where your stats place you in the 75%.

There is lots of really good information on this thread:

What is your intended major? And a 3.5 weighted GPA is going to be much lower than UW.

For starters, I’d recommend your state flagship - UArk

You automatically qualify for honors college admission at UAlabama and Ole Miss, and admission at selective Truman State, UMN morris, and UMW - apply this summer and you have your oos safeties done.
You have a good shot at Michigan State 's and Temple’s honors college, Earlham, Butler, Drake, Creighton, Guilford, Unc Wilmington honors, Unc Asheville, Eckerd, several more low match oos possibilities.
Now, looking for oos matches : Rhodes, St Olaf, Connecticut College.
Low reaches : Dickinson, Denison, Skidmore, Fordham.
You should have no problem finding reaches and Dream schools. :slight_smile:

32 is 98th percentile. But I appreciate your degrading and dehumanizing attitude @perspectivestude

Thank you guys for all of the replies. I now actually have a 3.5 unweighted GPA. I have no decided major, and I have had the money talk with my parents and we are well off enough they will not struggle with paying for any college I choose.

@HaydenSteel Talk about taking criticism lightly lol
A 32 is not very high at all if you are targeting good private schools and even top level public schools… It’ll place you in the middle 50% of those competitive schools at best. However, if you aren’t aiming for the most competitive schools like Cal or Ivies or whatnot, your ACT is pretty decent. Anyways, what is your UW GPA? Any ECs?

The excellent suggestions offered by @MYOS1634 are a great place to start. Your high ACT score will open many doors for you. Start early on your application and spend time crafting a great one.

You said that you did not want a Christian college, so note that St. Olaf’s is Lutheran affiliated but don’t let that dissuade you from applying if it has other things you want. It’s a wonderful school and not doctrinaire at all from what I’ve heard.

What are some interests that you’d like to continue (or maybe start) in college?

A 32 is an incredible score. That’s the problem with this site - people will put you down for having a score higher than 98% of test takers lmao

Is your goal to get out of Arkansas? Are you looking for large, medium, or small sized schools? How important are sports to you? What are your areas of study that you might want to pursue? Ask yourself these questions. Also a 32 is really great, just keep your grades up 2nd semester! Sorry that some adults are acting like kids on this site…I like your essay idea as well. Do you have a teacher or college counselor at your school that can help you edit your essay?

The “chances” thread is not usually used for the “tell me where to apply” questions. And, with such limited info, its not going to be any for anyone to make useful suggestions. Remember, the average ACT of students taking it is 21, so your score is good. We dont know the rigor of your coursework, nor much else about your history to be of much help at this point. You might wish to share more info.

I don’t know why everyone’s ripping on OP. 32 may not seem impressive on this site where everyone has 32+ but at my prep school our average ACT score is about a 26-28 whereas our average gpa is about a 3.5 weighted so it is definitely much higher in comparison to gpa. OP what major are you looking to study? And how big would you like the school to be about?

@HaydenSteel @lhw1998
32 isn’t high, at least not on this website. If you want it to be high, go somewhere else.
People tryin to get praise for a 32, smh [-X

@Shabeezy People DESERVE praise for a 32.

The whole, “Chance me w/ a 4.8/35/17 EC’s” that turns into, “REJECT, YOU SHOULD HAVE CURED CANCER”

Is what gives this site a bad name. People who scored a 10 on the ACT have just as much a right to seek advice on this site as people who scored a 36, and neither should be disparaged for being proud of their accomplishments. “smh”

@mjr2013
10 ACT lol
