Lower numbers for Yale SCEA

The number of early applications to Yale College has fallen 5 percent compared to last year, the admissions office said today.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions received 5,265 applications this year, down from a record 5,556 in 2008. Jeff Brenzel, dean of undergraduate admissions, declined to speculate on the possible reasons for this year’s dip in application numbers.

“I think speculating about small fluctuations in year to year counts is pointless,” Brenzel said in an e-mail. He added that this year’s application figures are still 6 percent higher than the numbers recorded in 2007, the first year Harvard and Princeton did not offer their early admissions programs.

Last year, Yale admitted a record low 13.4 percent of early applicants. Brenzel said he expects a similar rate for the class of 2014.

wooooot=] a little less competition for all of us.

Sounds like they’re going to accept a lower percentage this year though. I don’t think this 5% decrease means much for us.

I wish :).

this means greater than or equal to. cuz he wouldn’t say that yale would accept more applicants cuz that would sound bad.

Ya…I could see somewhere around a 17% acceptance rate for Yale SCEA.

^Dammmmn, 17% sounds nice! :stuck_out_tongue: Doubt it’ll be any lower than last year’s rate, although probably similar.

id guess around 15% ish

Or lesser than.

hmmm…5265 people…i wonder what they’re like…how many with big awards/athletes…etc

when you put it into perspective,it’s such a small portion of college applicants

I’m thinking about 14%.

They aren’t going to take many more than they did last year, if at all. I’d constrain the guesses to 14 or 15%.

dec 15th wont come fast enuffff =[

Yeah I’m thinking 14-15% too…mannn that’s an 85% reject/defer rate though, think about how much that is :[

no, chibistar, it’s glass half full, not half empty!!!
or… i guess… 15% full not 85% empty.

i actually think they’re going to drop, maybe? they accepted 742/5556 (13.4%) last year,
and they’re going to accept less this year, probably at least 50 less, so 692/5265 and that’s already below 13%. i’d say in the 12% somewhere, and plus it always sounds better for the school if early rates consistently drop.

I think the decrease in early applicants can in part be attributed to the bad publicity surrounding the Yale graduate student’s death and the economy, though it’s just pure speculation on my part.

^ I think that too, to a degree.

Especially if they weren’t that set on Yale to begin with, it (violence/crime) may have deterred them from applying EA. But those who really really do want to go to Yale are maybe more willing to overlook that, since safety issues can arise at any campus?

I don’t know, just what I’ve been surmising.

Well, sometimes I like to tell myself that a lot of those applicants (maybe up to 1000) are applying just to see if they are accepted, and end up making Yale’s acceptance rate look beastly? Of course, I’m pretty sure I’m wrong, and please don’t correct me. This is my escape!

cadillac i like to think the same thing

especially because it’s only yale out of hyp who do early admits now… that’s why i applied early to yale in the first place.

then i fell in love with it.
and my heart is going to break into two pieces whenever the snail mail arrives after dec 15 because a) im international and b) im international

^sigh, if only harvard and princeton didn’t withdraw… then we’d have more of a chance.
